Experience & Advancement

At the end of each session, each participating player will be asked the below questions. For each affirmative question, gain one experience points. Experience points can be spent on skills and talents described below and in more detail in the Alien RPG Rulebook.

Experience

For each affirmative answer following a session, gain one experience:
  • Did you participate in the session?
  • Did you risk someone or something to advance your background or personal agenda?
  • Did you put yourself in danger to protect an ally PC?
  • Did you challenge or endanger a rival PC?
  • Did you make a Panic Roll?
  • Did you discover or reveal a secret in the world?
  • Did you adapt physically or psychologically to your new home?
  • Did you thrive, perhaps by paying a portion of your Shareholder Agreement ?
  • Did you have a moment of extraordinary action, whether it was successful or not?

Advancement

When you have five or more experience after a session, you may:
  • Increase a Skill by one step (5 XP), including from zero to one. If you have at least one rank in the skill, you must have used it in the previous session. If you have no ranks, you must describe a scene in which another member of the group willingly instructed you in using the skill.
  • Gain one Talent (5 XP) from your Career or from the General Talents list. Before you can use your new talent, you must succeed at a relevant Attribute roll (no skill or stress bonus), which can only be attempted once per day. If a another member of the group can teach you this Talent, this roll succeeds automatically.
  • Pay off a portion of your share (10 XP). Pioneer, Paramilitary, and Scientific characters are liable to the Shareholder Agreement . One manner of paying off this share is to expend experience. Neither Devout nor Corporate characters are liable to the Sharehold Agreement.
  • At GM's discretion, players may request a substantial boon (8 XP), such as the treatment of a grave disease or injury, the procurement of private quarters or land, the awakening of a secondary character from cryosleep, special proficiency, or other bonus. This can have a variety of effects. Alternatively, a portion of paid share may be relinquished for the same effect.
