Sermo Vulgaris
Sermo Vulgaris, or the Common Speech is the name given to the Caleian language. As the name suggests, it is the most widely-used language in the lands of the Caleian Empire and serves as the lingua franca of the known world. It has evolved significantly over time, though the only record of this comes in the written word. As a result, scholars often learn the Common Speech's older variant, known as the Sermo Classicum, or Classic Speech. The Sermo Classicum is still in use today, mostly by scholars and patricians who view the Sermo Vulgaris with some disdain, often referring to it as the Sermo Plebius, or Plebeian Speech. Both versions of the language can somewhat understand each other's vague meanings, although the Sermo Classicum can easily be misunderstood due to the centuries large gap the two languages have. In fact, it's a wonder the languages are so close at all.
Geographical Distribution
There are some regional variants of the Sermo Vulgaris which become more prominent the farther one travels but for the most part, the language has remained more or less united. Sometimes, wealthy noblemen or simple merchants from outside lands will learn the Common Speech for ease of trading.
