Dementrium

Properties

Material Characteristics

Dementrium is a deep purple-pink metal with white shards in it. The metal is also very heavy and tends to be cold.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Dementrium has a very rare and sought after ability, it is extremely resistant to magic. Where lead has a minor resistance to magic, dementrium can not only resist magic but nullify magical abilities and block spells and magical effects.

Compounds

No material can mix with dementrium as it is a very unique metal, alloys made with it becomes fragile useless alloys that often tears itself apart.

Geology & Geography

Dementrium is a very rare metal and its ore is only found deep within the Underdark. Mining it has, therefore, become very dangerous and there are only a handful of mines in the entire world.

Origin & Source

Dementrium ore comes from a very rare ore known as pink ore. It is easy to spot the ore but finding it is hard. It is called pink ore because of it the very bright pink of the stone it is found within.

History & Usage

History

Dementrium was first used in the first age by Thornheart to capture sorcerers. After Thornheart was disbanded the metal was used by different people like guards, mercenaries or bounty hunters to protect themselves against magic or to capture magic users.

Discovery

Thornheart had a mining expedition into the Underdark where they found a pink ore and refined it and eventually discovered its properties and made both armor and shackles out of it to improve their hunting of magic.

Everyday use

There is not a common use for dementrium, but bounty hunters, mercenaries or high ranking guards might carry a set of shackles or have parts their armor imbued with dementrium plates.

Refinement

The refinement process of dementrium is long and tedious. Melting it is impossible by any forge of blast furnace as its melting point is beyond any technology available in the world, but heating it up enough to carefully shape it is possible in forges, after it is refined in special made refineries.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

When dementrium is refined and heated up to purify the metal, weaker parts of the metal break off and sometimes evaporate, this evaporation is collected in the few blast furnaces that can refine dementrium, contained and in time it become a thin, viscous liquid that is slightly sticky. This liquid and gas is extremely toxic and some have found use for it as a poisonous gas or liquid. It is extremely rare, but often just called "Pink Sludge".

Hazards

When refining dementrium some gas is let out from the machinery which is very toxic and if not careful can lead to sickness and eventually death.

Environmental Impact

The gas from melting down pink ore can kill creatures and plantlife so the blast furnaces made for dementrium are often located away from life.

Reusability & Recycling

Though dementrium is incredibly tough and heavy, making it hard to damage, it can be damaged. When dementrium is damaged, it rarely bends like other metals, it chips and breaks off into mostly useless pieces. Since dementrium is never truly molten in smelters, it is very hard to reuse and reforge dementrium debris. Dementrium is therefore rarely reused after it is broken.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Dementrium is extremely rare but useful, this makes dementrium a very exotic and rare metal. There are only a few places in the world where it is found and the process is very dangerous so it is not a metal often sold or bought, but is very sought after when available.
