The First Weave

Among the tribes of the catfolk it is traditional to make a piece of fabric for an unborn child. The fabric is decorated with traditional patterns learned from the elders of the tribe and the oldest ornamental patterns are probably older than the written record of the catfolk. It is thought to bring good luck that everyone in the tribe weaves even a line, to welcome the newborn to the family and tie them into the tribe.   When the child is born, the fabric is used as a sling for the baby's first years, so the baby can be close to its mother or other relative taking care of it. When the child is old enough to choose their own name, after which they are regarded as adults, they will make an item using the fabric; be it a cover for bed, or a curtain for door frame, or perhaps a carpet, or a bag or shirt, it is thought to bring them good luck throughout their life.

Execution

Often done by the mother or other close -often female- relative of the baby. Still, everyone of the tribe are deemed to add something into the First Weave according to their talents.

Components and tools

Looms (often a simple traditional backstrap loom), dyed thread and lots of time.

Observance

When the mother realises she is pregnant it is significant to start the First Weave immediately. People of the Tribe are often informed indirectly about the pregnancy when someone starts the First Weave.
