Alterra Land of Broken Skies

Long ago, a cataclysm broke the known world, shattering its landscapes and wiping much of its history. Motes of land, some the sizes of cities, were launched into the air, never to return to the ground and suspended in the atmosphere. Mass extinctions and the breakdown of many civilizations occurred.Wild magic plagued the world, and weakened the borders between the material and outer planes.   Over a millennium after the Breaking, the societies of Alterra have made only slight progress in returning to its former glory. On the ground, vast frontiers of dangerous expanses lie outside the somewhat rough and tumble settlements. The people in the skies above live on skylands, traveling between them and the ground via skyships, wind skiffs, and teleportation circles. The cities in the sky keep themselves safe by staying in the sky, the cities on the ground rely on strong walls, magic, or other defenses from raiders and hostile beings. Beyond these civilizations in the sky and on the ground, the peoples of the world have made places for themselves in The Underground and beneath the waves. The year is 1739 AB. Folks of all walks of life do what they can to survive and thrive in the beautiful and dangerous world of Alterra.
