The Black Greed
The boogiemen of Julik
A thieves guild that calls the city of Julik home. Authorities haven't been able to find the location of their base within the concrete labyrinth that is the city. They're an exclusive and renowned group of thieves that uphold a reputation of being the best thieves in Altheria. It is rumored that only one of them have ever been caught, but before he got to jail the wagon he was being transported on was jumped and everyone disappeared. No one knows how this guild recruits or what kind of species call this guild home. But if you see a building with a black coin stuck to the outside door, you know the Black Greed have been there.
Structure
The highest rank within the guild is the Task Master, they're responsible for assigning jobs, testing recruits and handling the guilds top jobs.
Below Task Master are Ghosts, these are the elite of the Black Greed they're the ones that will take on the high value jobs that may involve royalty or nobles. Next are the recruiters/informants, these are the eyes and ears of the guild. Their job is to blend into society and listen to news, stories and rumors regarding anything that happens to the city. They're also the ones that are responsible for finding and persuading a potential recruit to join them. They're adept in tracking and combat.
Next are the Mentors, they take on the new recruits and teach them everything they need to know about the guild, the way they operate, how to value an item and techniques for stealing. After Mentor is the rank of thief, this is the most populated rank and the hardest to rise out of as one has to be truly exceptional among such a talented guild. On the same level as Thief is Appraiser. They often don't go on jobs but examine the items that are stolen, determining if it's real, the worth and where they can sell it. The appraisers are essentially the vendors that sell to help fund the Black Greed.
The lowest rank is recruit, or commonly referred to as Rooks. Once a recruit has agreed to join the guild they are removed from society. All traces of their life vanish as they disappear into the night. They typically spend 2-3 months in teams of two under the guidance of a Mentor. Recruits have to pass a trial if they wish advance to the rank of Thief or Appraiser. This trial is different for every recruit and is meant to attack their weaknesses.
Public Agenda
The Black Greeds agenda is anything but public. City officials believe they're just a group of scoundrels attempting to make some quick coin.
Civilians view the Black Greed almost like the boogie man. To see their mark on one of your neighbors door is terrifying because no one ever knows whose next. Rumors among the civilians is that the Black Greed works for the seventh district of Julik and steals their valuables in hopes of keeping people from becoming wealthy enough to move into the seventh district.
The Black Greed's current agenda is to start building outposts in other districts of the city so that they can operate faster and more efficiently. Their main headquarters is located in the fifth district and in order to expand locations they need more gold. So the Black Greed currently are plaining on taking on more jobs and increasing their productivity in order to bring in as much revenue as possible.
Assets
Their biggest asset is their notoriety. Civilians rarely speak out against the Black Greed in public as they fear any possible retribution from the guild. Another asset of the guild is their network of talented recruiters and informants. The recruiters make sure that the Black Greed gets the best talent available preventing them from going to other gangs of criminals. The informants have essentially eyes and ears everywhere except for the castle. But if something of interest happens in the city the Black Greed will know.
History
The Black Greed was founded in the year 103 or about 5 years ago. No one is truly sure how they formed but their legend has quickly spread. They're talented thieves who operate more like ghosts than living beings. Their most famous job to date was robbing the city court of four pieces of crucial evidence against the second district governor who had been suspected of accepting bribery and using the district guard to extort his enemies. Thanks to their intervention their was no evidence and the governor was found innocent. He now still operates the second district.
