Easily one of the greatest technological achievements I've seen in my long life.
- Elected Crown Representative Imbros Verity
Skyships were invented around 30 years ago and, in that time, have become a staple of Alturis and a symbol of it's progress and culture, they are used for mass travel to other countries as well as delivering supplies and goods to various towns.
Skyships themselves are an expensive and rare thing to build and acquire however they are decadent and gorgeous things of technological marvel and beauty.
They utilise unique runic engravings all across the ship to allow it to sustain flight, the runes are kept charged by the runic shards found in the skyship's engine room... removing runic shards causes all technology aboard the ship to stop working, leading to potentially disastrous results.
Skyships can vary in size though often are built to model sea-faring ships as that way they can use their naval functions and sky functions. The smallest skyships are either known as scout ships or hip-quivers and are built to transport up to 3 people a very short distance in the form of rocket propulsion.
Most average skyships require a minimum number of crew and can house a maximum of around 50 people.
There are also a small amount of skyships that have come into the hands of pirates. Only the most cunning, brutal or wealthy of them though. These skyships, above all others, should be feared.
Some people have also paid to have the runes engraved and necessary modifications made to their homes leading to flying abodes across Alturis... though these flying homes are seen as ripe for robbery by skypirates.
Skyships Owned by Factions:
- The Artificer Soul: The Soul own over 30 skyships. This is primarily due to the fact they build these technological flying marvels and the numbers constantly change due to them selling, building and working on skyships regularly.
- The Crownsguard: The Crownsguard only own 4 skyships and those are owned by the elected crown and so are not free for the crownsguard to use at their will. The skyships are mainly saved for use against prominent sky pirates or to protect nobility moving in their flying estates.
- The Umala Privateers: They own a single skyship that lies in the centre of the island of Umala, this skyship is saved for paid work from the elected crown or nobility and is personally captained by the Pirate King for these endeavours that are not EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE to cheap.
- The Inquisitors: The Inquisitors own 3 skyships, two are in transit moving across Alturis whilst the final one has the exclusive job of searching for the Spectre's Arcaneum with Inquisitor Gayle searching for the estate.
- The Claret Order: The Claret Order own 2 skyships though tend to struggle for high quality crew or captain and so pay for capable or experienced sailors and mercenaries for jobs that require their vessels.
- The Denizens: Do not own any skyships for a MULTITUDE OF REASONS.
- The Mirrored: Do not own any skyships due to their individual work and, frankly, not needing one for what they do.
- The Grinners: Similar to the Mirrored, the Grinners are a moving, nomadic people who don't form groups and so have no need of skyship.
- The Heralds: The Journalist faction do not need a skyship themselves and often utilise a ship with others to interview them and make their way to a breaking story.
- The Horde: The Utrunk families colony is built upon a large skyship, in the centre of which lies the arena crucible.
- The Springsteps: None due to their love of nature and mistrust of technology.
- The Magus: None due to their educational capacity in the world.
- The Weaving Providence: None truly know as the Weaving Providence are so secretive about their assets and belongings. Though it is highly unlikely that they've got a skyship as that is not truly what they deal in.
