Sanguine Elves

(Sanguine Elves have the traits of the Mul Daya presented in the Zendikar supplement, with a different set of weapon proficiencies; they’re reprinted here for reference.)   Ability Score Increase. Your Strength increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 2. Age. Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old. Alignment. Sanguine elves honor their ancestors and traditions far more strongly than most; though they are still elves at heart, they’re more likely to be lawful than their cousins.. Size. Elves range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium. Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Superior Darkvision. Accustomed to centuries in the lower planes, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill. Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep. Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Elvish. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Elven literature is rich and varied, and their songs and poems are famous among other races. Many bards learn their language so they can add Elvish ballads to their repertoires. Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or what- ever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight. Sanguine Elf Magic. You know the chill touch cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hex spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the darkness spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells. Sanguine Elf Weapon Training. You have proficiency with the scimitar, double scimitar, shortbow, and longbow.   Blood elves are descended from Noldor who didn’t make it back with the rest of the drow and shadow elves. Held in the Shadowfell for some time, their sojourn in the lands of the dead irrevocably altered them, tuning them into their ancestors in a way that no other elf or any mortal could fully appreciate. Their innate magics and difficulty in direct sunlight stem from this long period in the Shadowfell. Though they arrived on the Prime Material plane several thousand years ago, they maintain their ways, and remain mostly situated in their frozen northern lands.   Appearance Sanguine elves tend to run pale for elves, with skin tones ranging from dark tan to nearly white. Many vaguely resemble corpses, which can make them unsettling indeed. Hair is usually jet black, bright red, golden yellow, or white, with eyes in striking variations of human eye colors. Though their skin often looks to have been leached of vitality, their hair and eyes stand out with sharply defined colors.   Clothing Honoring their ancestors and traditions is of paramount importance to a blood elf. Most wear elven clothing in the style made popular when elves first sat at a loom; they are living history exhibits, with nearly all favoring loose tunics and sarongs or robes in hot weather and leather or furs in the cold. Several outfits are enchanted or magically repaired over the years, and there are elves who wear clothing that is thousands of years old.   Art For a people whose reverence of the past rivals even the dwarves, sanguine elves surprise many with the expressiveness of their art. Transient art forms are quite common, with flower arranging or origami serving as a release for traditional elves who still understand that life progresses and all things are temporary. Though there is a sizeable enough community of painters and sculptors among blood elves, their enduring legacies tend to be poetry and song, or plays honoring their predecessors. These are often committed to memory by the artist’s descendents in addition to being written down, so that they’ll never be lost.   Religion Unsurprisingly, ancestor cults dominate blood elven religious life, with numerous holidays meant to support the honored dead and bring their world closer to the Prime Material, however temporarily. Because several elves have ascended to godhood (and blood elves remember them all), a handful of deities current and passed on also receive special worship. Unlike most other elves, sanguine elves have a minimal druidic tradition.   Cuisine Sanguine elf food is simple fare, but good. Most flatbreads use wild seeds and grains as a simple flour to be mixed with animal fat, with meat served alongside foraged greens, berries, herbs, and root vegetables. One matter of debate among blood elves is whether to continue the domestication of oats or rely on wilder samples, as one continues the efforts of their ancestors while the other is more true to how they lived at the time. Regardless, oats and sheep (the first animal domesticated by elves) both hold a special place in blood elven culture. Blood elves are notoriously stubborn about avoiding fusion cuisine that includes their own techniques.   Bloodlines History and myth agree that eight hundred blood elves emerged from the Shadowfell to settle modern day elven lands. The politics of sanguine elf lands revolve around recognition for attaining one of these coveted names; a Bloodhouse only has five Heirs, elves who earned the name through trials against their fellow contenders. Heirs guide their families, though blood elves are always keenly aware of their ancestry on both sides, and most need to decide which bloodline is more in line with their own goals and ambitions. The popular term ‘bloodweight’ signifies this; when torn between two sides of one’s family, the blood with the most weight draws an elf towards it. Blood elves are loathe to engage in skullduggery against their own kind; a pitiless assassin sent abroad to advance the blood elf agenda would sooner engage a rival family member in an honorable duel than try deceitful means of advancing her position. Sanguine elf ancestors are always watching, and these myriad conflicts have made for unparalleled dramatic tales that delight people the world over. These Bloodlines have formed themselves into different broad associations over the years.
