History
The Marais Lethaned has had a long and tumultous history. Once on the outskirts of Great Kernev, the Petty Kingdom of Werren was attacked by outliers driven Westward by the War of the Erlking. The attackers were driven back, but the region was inundated by a tidal wave after The Fall of Ys.
The outpost of Reudier was selected by Waroch I of Gwened to protect the Southern Bank of the Liger, a twin colony with Naoned. The outpost was deemed impractical to defend by Roland of Gwitreg and Armel Guyon, who abandoned it to focus on reinforcing the Faubourg de Marchix outside of Naoned on the Northern Bank. Both locations were overwhelmed quickly by the Sea Dogs during the Sack of the Bloodmoon. Following the Battle of Relec, the region became part of the Grand-Duchy of Akitania but was taken by Lethan High King Nevenoe I.
The region fell to raiders during during the Fomorian interregnum, where it was used as an anchorhead for the attack on Naoned, then, along the the Ar Briwer. These successive defeats, and the more advantageous position of its Northern neighbor, meant that the early potential of the region was never realized.

Political Neighbors
The Biskonti Retz is located on the Southern Bank of the Liger River, located across the water from the Barony of Gwenrann and the Viscounty of Naoned. The Konts of Naoned, in their role as the Dugs of Letha, laid claim to a large section of the Southern Bank opposite the City of Naoned
The the East, the March of Gwiniegi Naoned takes up much of the border, while the South is almost entirely taken up by the Akitanian Vassal, the Lordship of Montaigu.
Geographic Boundaries
Despite the loss of its riverfront near Naoned, the Northern boundary of the Biskonti largely follows the curve of the Liger, widening as it empties into the Pleg-Mor-Gwaskon on the Mor Bras. The Western Coastline, the Ar Mor Jad, takes up the entire west of the country. South of the prominent Beg Gweltaz, the Bay of Letha follows the coastline, closed by the island of Enez-Noirmoutier, which belongs to Montaigu. The Southern region of the Biskonti is the Marais Lethanaed, a flat plain of meadows and marshland.
Military
Retz is part of the Marches of Neustria, seperating Letha from its neighbors, although the region, a later and frequently changing addition to the Duchy, never received the same unique benefits of the Marches and was never held by a Markiz. Nevertheless, it is still defended by the great castles of Machikoul and La Benâte, the Southernmost of the fortress chain on the Lethan side.
Religion
After the reign of Conomor, Retz became a center of religious life of the Faith, taking advantage of Akitanian control over more independently minded Letha, but allowing ease of access to and from the growing port of Naoned. It became a center of religious construction, overseen by the Archperfect of Tours, and sporting numerous abbeys, priories and churches. The abbey of Tenu sits on a river of the same name, while Noirmoutier Abbey is located on Enez-Noirmoutier, across the bay in Montaigu, but with strong connections to Retz.

Ar Mor Jad
- The maritime coastline along the Pleg-mor Gwaskogn is the Jade Coast, named after the distinctive green colour of its seawater. The coast stretches from the Southern bank of the Liger River to the Marais Lethaned Marshland. The Beg Gweltaz is a notable navigational point for ships approaching Naoned from Silvercoast, as it signals the transition from coastal to river navigation. North of the point is marked by fine-sand beaches, with low-cliffs and maritime pine forests. Southwards from the point is made up of jagged rocky shores until the marshlands are reached. The coastline is a hotbed of smuggling between Letha and Akitania.
