Durendal

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Forged with finely tempered Silversteel and strengthened with runic magik and ere-hud, Durendal is indestructible, never losing its edge. It is magikally bound to an ere-hud that identifies it as "the sharpest sword in all existence", maintaining its supernatural edge. A skilled wielder can cut through a boulder with one swing or slice through flesh and bone with no resistance.   The sword is kept in a golden sheath made by the Korrigan, the only sheath that can hold the blade, and it is said to be bound by the veil of Ganymede the Waterbearer, although this last may be a later addition to the mythos.

Significance

Originally known by the Breton name Diren Dall, Durendal was forged for Roland, the Champion of Normandy and Lord of the Marches of Neustria, a magical weapon to assist in the battle against the champions of the Erlking, and used in the final battle of the conflict, where it was buried, along with Roland, in a landslide that sealed off the Erlking's forces outside of Rocamadour. It was recovered from the scene along with the Arkane horn, Oliphant and has been passed down by the King's of Gallia, the enduring symbols of royal power.
