Livre Tournois

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The largest circulated unit of coinage is the golden livre. The Livre was equivalent to 20 silver Sous and the Sol was worth 12 copper Deniers, the most common and smallest coinage in regular circulation. The Liard is a coin worth 3 Deniers, minted in some, but not all, sovereignties.   The Livre is largely used in the Northern regions of Kornôgel, most notably Akitania, Anjev, Gallia, Letha, Normandi and Tolosa. Its primary rivals, the Florin di La Citta Gigliata and the Ducat di Serenissima, are used in Kingdom of Navarre and the Golden Sea, but often accepted in Northern banks, with a similar situation for the Livre in the South. A fourth major currency, the Guilder of the Cloth Cities was abolished following the War of the Golden Spurs and the annexation of the region by Gallia.

Manufacturing process

Coinage is minted with the express permission of the Sovereign, but it can be granted in relative perpetuity to local authorities, such as local nobles, cities or clergy within a domain. As a result of this decentralized approach, the quality and composition of coinage, the minting process and utilized materials can vary greatly, affecting the value of the coinage and opening the market to currency speculation and exchange markets. However, the concept of the Livre Tournois, its general valuation and denominations are consistently understood. Forgeries are a common problem, as is the creation of deceptively similar foreign coins of lesser value. In rare circumstances, changes to metal composition allows a counterfeit coin to exceed a legitimately minted one.   The valuation of this largely hypothetical currency could be controlled by Royal Edict or changes to the ratio of precious metals within the coinage, allowing for currency valuation to be controlled centrally.

Significance

The Livre Tournois is the most widely accepted unit of currency used in Bedouar, utilized by the Kingdom of Gallia, its vassal states, and many mercantile organizations. The coinage, and its relative value, was first created in the banking center of Touraine, spreading across Anjev until its annexation by Gallia, standardizing the currency in the Duchy and eventually replacing the Livre Perysis, an older coinage minted in Per-Ys in Gallia itself. Once accepted in Anjev and Gallia, it quickly was taken up in the international shipping communities of Akitania and Normandi, becoming the de facto currency exchange of the Bediz world.
