Taranis, God of Thunder
Taranis (a.k.a. Thundercaller, the Fire of Arkane)
Divine Domains
Taranis is an important god in the Druidic faith, appearing in both Bediz, Korrigan and Tuatha cultures. His primary domain is that of a storm-god, controlling thunder and lightning. This has since evolved to include the fires that are started with lightning sources, making Taranis an important god of Arkane as well, held up as the progenitor of Druidecht and the protector of Falias.
While these are his primary domains, several secondary ones have become attached to him. Taranis is seen as a god of the sky, the sun and overland travel.
Holy Books & Codes
The Druidic faith expressly forbids the recording of sacred texts onto physical media, instead relying on a complex oral tradition passed down through the generations, strictly enforced and overseen to ensure accuracy.
Divine Symbols & Sigils
Taranis is most often associated with a golden or brass wheel of 8 spokes (Although 6-spoked variants are found in more Southerly regions.) This is thought to reference the sun or the divisions of the year, a matter of some discussion among Druidic scholars.
Beyond the wheel, Taranis is often shown grasping a stylized thunderbolt. While not as common, this iconography is found throughout Alvez and is typically associated with Taranis. In Formorian culture, Taranis is depicted as holding a hammer, an iconography that draws on a Formorian storm god, linking their traditional faith with the continental religion. However, this iconography has not been widely adopted outside of this subset.
Taranis, the god of Druidecht is associated with Oak Trees.
Holidays
Taranis is referenced in the celebrations of Kala-Hañv and Kalan Goañv, marking the beginning of Summerule and Winterrule, respectively. Great bonfires are lit for each, in the valleys for Kala-Hañv and the hilltops for Kalan-Goañv. Credited at beginning the first fire with his lightning strikes, Taranis is often mentioned in ceremonies surrounding these fires.
More rarely, Taranis is exalted on Nedeleg, specifically in relation to the burning of the Kef Nedeleg and the Ritual of the White Bulls, infusing his power into the trees that are used in these rituals.
