The Morgazh
Basic Information
Anatomy
Morgazh resemble humans from the waist up with minor variations, such as pointed ears, webbed hands and occasionally unnatural colors. From the waist down, they have the tentacles of giant octopi. In the abyss, they possess patterns of bio-luminescent markings on their tentacles, which pulse as they move.
Growth Rate & Stages
Morgazh grow as humans do, but with an accelerated adolescence and slow adulthood. Morgazh possess extreme longevity, if not full immortality, but the draining effect of the Abyss and violence of the Rim makes the veracity of this difficult to determine, as many Morgazh die of unnatural causes.
Ecology and Habitats
The Morgazh inhabit the liminal space of the Rim, a border region between the Shallows and the Abyss. A dark world, they are capable of handling immense pressures and are uncomfortable in the shallows. Morgazh fortresses are built around deep sea vents and magical ley-lines.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Morgazh catch fish and crustaceans, and farm plantlife near the thermal vents. They spend little time on gastronomy or presentation, adopting a utilitarian approach to sustenance.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Morgazh social structure is martial in nature, with clear hierarchies of command. Families are usually only to raise children, who then join garrisons to patrol the Rim.
Facial characteristics
Morgazh faces resemble humans, but possess small, pointed ears and sharp teeth. Their hair is usually dark shades, but brighter colours are not unheard of.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Morgazh live exclusively along the Rim between the Shallows and the Abyss, but have ranger outposts in the Abyss itself.
Average Intelligence
Incredibly intelligent, the Morgazh are among the most powerful Magik users in all of Bedouar and Faerie, rivaling even the Dragons.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Possessing excellent sight and hearing in the dark world of the Rim and Abyss, they can see in total darkness or low-light conditions. They are sensitive to light and unable to function well in the shallows and cannot survive for long on the surface, unable to breath air. They possess the ability to telepathically communicate.
Civilization and Culture
Major Organizations
The Rangers - exceptionally skilled soldiers and mages who are sent into the Abyss to monitor and occasionally counter growing threats, relieving pressure on the Rim. They are seen as the best of the best.
The Edgewatchers - The bulk of the population, to the point the division has become synonymous with the race. They are soldiers, mages and support staff serving the string of fortresses overlooking the abyss.
The Learned - Exceptional arcane researchers, seeking new ways of pushing the void further into the abyss.
Gender Ideals
The Morgazh are an egalitarian society, placing few distinctions socially between the sexes. Martial prowess and physical fitness are the most valued trait among both genders. Females are favoured for the Learned, while males are typically Edgewatchers, although neither is exclusive. The Rangers are made up of a generally equal mix.
Relationship Ideals
Utilitarian. Relationships serve the purpose of producing strong offspring.
Average Technological Level
Early industrial revolution. Magic has allowed the Morgazh some level of automation and mass production. Morgazh fortresses have a reputation for being conventionally unbreachable.

Morgazh communicate in Truespeech telepathically
Common Etiquette Rules
Respectful courtesy to authority is required at all times, as is frank and short communication. Morgazh hold themselves and all races to high standards of discipline.

Common Taboos

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Humanity - The Morgazh have little contact with humanity directly, but stories of them do make it to the surface, where they are seen as dark magicians corrupting the world with the very magic they actually prevent from spreading.
Other Merfolk
Marie-Morgane - The Morgazh view the relative newcomers to the Shallows with interest, finding their connection to the human world a vital source of information to grow their own magical knowledge and a vibrant information exchange has begun to flourish. They have also entrusted the Marie-Morgane with the ability to redirect VoidMagik, sealing it in unfortunate vessels, the Isfont, which are then sent into the Abyss.
Selkies - The Morgazh have little contact with the Selkie and are generally indifferent to them.
Finfolk - The Morgazh believe the Finfolk to be creatures tainted by Voidmagik and eliminate them as such. Finfolk are known to launch raids on the Rim, but are too disorganized to pose a threat except to lone stragglers.
Stormmaids - The Morgazh view Stormmaids as a powerful, if indirect ally, replenishing the leylines that keep the Abyss at bay. They will come to the aid of the creatures if they see them come under attack by the Abyss or Finfolk.
Lifespan
Possibly immortal or at least very longlived, Morgazh can still be killed with violence, disease or the life-draining qualities of the Abyss.
Conservation Status
The numbers of the Morgazh are unknown to outsiders, but constantly in flux as they battle the Abyss and hostile Finfolk.
Average Physique
Living in a constant state of vigilance, Morgazh tend to possess athletic and muscular builds, but otherwise come in all body types
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Morgazh come in all colours for their lower halves. Their upper bodies share the skin tones of humans, but also shades of grey, purple, blue and green. Their tails are often patterned.
