Windstone
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Windstones are used for navigation, primarily of ships and Windships, reacting the with aurora of the Gaoithe Sidhe. The interior of these clear or translucent stones glow with an inner light, changing when viewed from different angles to reflect the colors of the aurora. When a ship is traveling in a particular direction, or the magik infused winds pick up from a direction, the glow will become brighter. As the stones will glow day or night, even in overcast skies, they have become an essential tool for long-range travel.
The higher a stone's clarity and quality, the brighter the glow and the easier to read it will be, making finely cut, large stones sought after by large windships. Small crystals of lesser quality can be used to gain a quick read as a handheld or cheaper variety.
Large windstones are often held in a special, spinnable stand marked with notations to assist in navigation, on the bridge or atop the deck of a ship, and direct access to the exterior is not required, allowing the windstones to be kept with other technical equipment or used as part of the decor for fancier vessels. Encasing a windstone in iron, even an iron cage, will prevent it from glowing or reacting to the aurora.
Large amounts of energy are contained within windstones, which can be unleashed by its destruction.
