0.2 - The Fallout
Keep in mind that at this point, radiant and necrotic are new, and cold/ice is off limits. If anyone uses radiant or necrotic, NPCs will react with extreme alarm.
The year is 162. And died in 159, and Vira and the bulk of paritet are campaigning their way to kill Is.
Players "awake". They had just gone to sleep, so this must be a dream, right? But everything seems so real. The chill in the air, the scent of torch smoke. It's evening.
And all around them are centaurs running to and fro. Orders are being shouted.
"Hey, you! Paritet lackeys" the term is spit out at the group. "Are actually helping, or making things worse like your leader?"
If the players look at themselves, they are the same race and class, but their clothes are now Paritet uniforms (matching their armor types). It looks odd though, it's just 2 black lines making an = sign.
Around the players are supplies for setting up siege and other traps/barricades. Some things they can make- stakes, barricades, trenches, ballistae, catapults (I guess), net traps, bear traps, etc.
Why all of this? A scout reported that waves of creature are swarming out of the swamp. They are partially decomposed, yet somehow alive.
Paritet sent the party as a way to "help". They brought their fire power and their supplies. Centaurs are salty because they wouldn't be in this situation if not for Vira's ambition in the first place.
The centaurs give hateful glances at the group. "This is your leader's fault. Foolish woman." then will storm off.
Why not evacuate? 1. This site is holy. It is the burial ground and end journey of life. 2. They will be no safer in the hills with the creatures roaming.
Set up should be a few hours and tense, fast paced, dialogue quick and snappy. Everything uneasy and quiet despite all the work going on.
This goes into the night.
Then the attack happens.
Depending on how combat goes, either have the players still get told off by the centaurs for victory, or if they lose, they wake up as they die.
