Nothing attracts a mischief of Reaper Rats like the horrid, putrid scent of decay.

These creatures scour the area near their underground homes for - what they consider to be - a nice, decaying meal. The older, the better. Though they aren’t afraid of a lengthy trek if they catch the scent of something good to eat.

The worst part about these rodents? Where there’s one, there’s always more right around the corner.

Striding down the widow’s path I see a Reaper Rat.

Feasting on my father’s bones, till nice and plump and fat.

Begone! I shout, I kick and scream until it runs away.

But warning cries mean little when its friends come out to play.

— A children’s nursery rhyme

Rat or Reaper?

Reaper Rats can be difficult to distinguish from common variety rats, especially at a glance. Brown fur and a sandy underbelly, average in size, complete with a slim, pink tail. You would have to get quite close in order to get a look at any distinctive features.

For example, the claws of the Reaper Rat. Small and hidden (unless feasting on decaying matter or attacking something) you might not notice at first that their claws are the colour of obsidian. The prevailing myth is that generations ago, their claws were stained with the decay they so eagerly devoured, and that over time they evolved so that their claws appeared permanently stained. A tall tale, if you are a person of science, but one that is nonetheless used to scare children.

Habitats

Reaper Rats like to spend their time burrowed in small, underground cavern networks. These networks can be home to up to 150 rats at any given time.

Typically, they live in mild climates. Extreme heat and cold bothers them, but not enough to dissuade them from coming out of their home for a tasty meal. In fact, Reaper Rats will risk almost anything if the scent of decay is in the air - even if it means they might perish.
