Barisstone

A Barisstone is a gemstone that is typically found at mountain tops, but are occasionally found throughout the world. These stones naturally radiate light collected from the sun, producing a pure white light. A raw Barisstone stone, left uncut, will typically be found encased in sediment and minerals deposited by creatures attracted to the stone. In many cases, a Barisstone, long forgotten under the sediment and filth of the world, will be found during dynamic events that sheer the stone revealing a dull interior. The sheered surface of the Barisstone is then revealed to the sun. The Barisstone will tend to collect the light and begin radiate light thereafter. Collectors find these newly revealed Barisstone by tracking these sources of light, which is simplified during times of storm or an eclipse. Thus, these stones have sometimes been referred to as a “storm stone” or a “passage stone”.   A Barisstone that is professionally cut shimmers with a greater brightness than those found in the raw state. However, the duration that the stone releases light is unaffected by the cut. A cut Barisstone is attractive, with brighter (more elaborately cut) gemstones fetching higher values. In many cases, cutting Barisstones is often foregone to attempt refining a Barisstone.   The refining process of a Barisstone is quite elaborate. The intense heat required to refine a Barisstone also requires something unique: An absence of pressure. While forges can produce high heat, as soon as the air is removed, sustaining the heat becomes challenging. Fire, an ecstatic element, must separate to grow. Air, an element that pulls apart, allows the fire elements to spread. In other words, an exorbitant amount of heat must be generated without using the interaction of the elements of fire and air. To accomplish this feat, two approaches are used. The first is through magical means. One might naturally think of heat metal. However, Barisstone is not metallic. The Barisstone is placed within a crucible that includes a small opening at the top. A fire is ignited within the crucible, causing the fire and air to escape and the metallic crucible to close. Heat metal is continuously applied until the crucible melts. As the crucible melts into a well below, the Barisstone falls with it. As the Barisstone in a pseudo-liquid state falls, it splashes and solidifies into a refined Barisstone. The residual hardened metal is detached and the refined Barisstone is released.   A refined Barisstone, dissimilar to raw or cut Barisstone, is able to retain light for extended periods. Notably, a Barisstone that currently retains light can be smashed and shed light from the resultant dust for an extended period. This has been noted to even penetrate supernatural or magic darkness. Those who deal with the borders of life and death and the passage to the Gloaming Shroud understand the significance of this property. When worldly beings enter into the Gloaming Shroud, they are unable to use   But the Barisstone is beyond comprehensible origins. Aven, believed to hold the light of the world, had but one piece of a masterwork. The Gerit, the great radiant light, holds captive two great beings. As their battle rages, pieces of the Gerit fall to the world. They are of godly origins. The light of the Gerit edifies all.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The Barisstone is not crystalline like a gem, though the beautiful qualities of the stone have led to very ornate cuts by jewelers. When held, the Barisstone produces a strong sensation within the body. The sensation has been likened to sitting in water for an extended period. Eventually, the water feels connected to the body. Those who have held Barisstones for extended periods forget that they are holding them.

Geology & Geography

Many Barisstones have been found in blighted regions such as the Folding Ruin or the Creeping Blight. This is largely due to the broken, harsh terrain that may periodic cause the coated stones to be easily found. The light produced by the Crystal contrasts with the terrain. Those who find Barisstones are often perplexed that some stones are covered by layers of material while others have little or no external layering.

Origin & Source

The Barisstone is a creation by Iyem, the prime God. Iyem created the Gerit as a prison in which to contain Ther. When Iyem created the Gerit, he too was captured inside. As the battle rages within, fragments of the massive construction break away. Some of these fragments fall to Uinsil. As the purpose of the Gerit (and thereby the Barisstone) was designed to bind, the Barisstone exhibits binding properties unseen in other materials. It is immune to transmutation and cannot be created by anyone other than Iyem.
