Gloaming Shroud
The Gloaming Shroud is a plane of existence created to hide the sovereign of the children of the Taladin. It was created by the efforts of Gedu, Graciure, and Bari. These are the Heir of Redemption, Heir of Healing, and the Heir of Sanctuary respectively. When the Gloaming Shroud was forged, Ukt (the Heir of Death), could not see within the shroud. For the time, the Gloaming Shroud was a place of peace and mercy. However, Ukt would find entry, leading wicked creature to feed on the spirits of those departed. Thus, the Heirs Gedu, Graciure, and Bari would fight an unending war against the hordes of death to lead lost souls to sanctuary.
Geography
The Gloaming Shroud is a vast and turbulent world. While the material that composes the Gloaming Shroud is purely essence, the essence is obedient. Reformed by will, the Gloaming Shroud casts itself at high plateaus, steep canyons, vast plains, or even broken mountains. When disordered, the Gloaming Shroud appears to be a swirling, unyielding eddy. Like the sands of a twisting storm, obscuring the eyes and ears to anything beyond.
For those who are destined to enter this place, accounts have been made of the pale colorations spoiled by streaks of black where the essence is yet refounded. Those who have walked within the shroud have noted that, at times, one might walk upward when the plain is straight before you. Or that a vast canyon may create a bridge where none was present. It is a place where the intelligent will falter from attempts to find reason and the weak-willed struggle to move forward.
Ecosystem
The Gloaming Shroud was forged without elements, cast from the will of the Heirs. As such, there are no natural constructs, no stones, water, fire. It is purely a place of essence. The wanderers, the sovereign spirits that have been brought to this place, have been separated from their physical bodies. In the Gloaming Shroud, they take the appearance that they believe themselves to be. This is not a passing curiosity, a brief momentarily conclusion of thought, but of the fundamental belief and character that is the person. The essence preserves this image, seeking to remain ordered and bound as the sovereign.
Unlike in the material world where the consumption of essence becomes increasingly more complicated, in the Gloaming Shroud it is a battle of will and projection. A system of beliefs where the perception prevails. When two sovereign interact and one is victorious over the other, essence of one is taken into the other. This continued process may eventually bring about the conclusion of the existence of the weaker sovereign and the magnification of the victorious.
The Heirs Gedu, Graciure, and Bari have sought to end the suffering of the sovereign spirits of the children of Tala. To do this, these Heirs raise soldiers to defend against those that seek to do harm. Beginning this work in the mortal realm, they often gifts and power to individuals that do their work. For them, a great task awaits. Upon their mortal demise, these soldiers join the armies of their patrons to protect the wandering spirits of the realm from the second death.
The denizens of death that hunt in the Gloaming Shroud are motivated by a single purpose. This purpose is to consume. By taking in essence, these creatures magnify themselves. Behemoths, creations of death, are massive creatures that continue to roam throughout the Gloaming Shroud. Frightening and terrifying to behold, their power is unrivaled.
Localized Phenomena
While entry to the Gloaming Shroud is generally associated with the "first death", or when the sovereign and parallel are no longer bonded, there are ways to access the Gloaming Shroud. By channeling the powers of life and death, incantations used in the creation of the Gloaming Shroud, portals may be opened. Mortal beings that are still "bonded", or have both their sovereign and parallel coupled, are able to gain entry into this realm.
Upon entry to this realm, accounts ahve been made that their eyes could not see and their ears could not hear. It has been said that, "Your eyes feel as though you've never seen before, not blind, but caught in a fantastic twisting of sands that fail to form into an image." and "Your ears hear whispers that sound like words you can't understand. As though the speaker is next to you, but yet no one is there."
Daring individuals, set on learning about this realm sacrificed themselves in pursuit of knowledge. "We sought to see if a torch could be lit. It could, but yet our eyes could not see. Though I could feel the warmth of the torch after I had lit it, my companion recorded that he could not feel the warmth." Eventually, it would happen that, "We found that the root of this cause was conviction. My companion wasn't actually sure that the torch had been lit. We repeated the experiment and, using signals for indicated when the torch was lit, found the he could then feel the warmth of the torch. It appears that the perception and knowledge used together change how different phenomena are experience in this Gloaming Shroud." Yet, no light could be seen throughout this entire experience. This experience was then repeated using oil lamps, charcoal, and other minerals that gave off light. Finally, the experiment became successful when Barisstone were used a light source.
"Immediately upon entering the Gloaming Shroud with the Barisstone in hand, the drifting swirling veil was pushed from our eyes, stretching nearly sixty feet from the stone itself. Beneath our feet was grey rock as though rock had always been there. We walked for sometime, but as the light from the Barisstone waned, our vision left. We waited for the experiment to conclude. Eventually, the portal was closed and we returned. Upon our return, I was surprised to find that my companion during the journey was a lifeless mass. He had the form of his body as I'd seen him in the Gloaming Shroud before the Barisstone faded, but it was if nothing held his body together anymore. Quickly, his body deteriorated, crumbling into pieces. I was in shock. It would be some time before I learned that creatures lurked in the Gloaming Shroud. In the time between the light of the Barisstone had ended and our return to the mortal realm, one of these creatures had found my companion, not more than six feet from me, and utterly destroyed him. I believe my work has concluded. That was too much for me."
