Magic

When Tala awakened the "Gem of Power" within the Taladin, this allowed the Taladin to speak "names and words." Simply said, this allowed the Taladin to manipulate the world around them by extending themselves.   Magic is the extension of essence from an individual to create an event or effect. Events might include the conjuration of a creature, whereas effects might include the manifestation of light. The caster, the speaker of the words of power, draws from their essence to create these according to their will. However, much as sentences depend on specific words and structure to be understood, the laws surrounding magic are much the same. Without the proper structure, the essence will remain passive and without the conviction, the essence will not be extended.   Since the times of Tala, many people held the traditions of speaking words of power. As those traditions ended, either because the elders that led the traditions died without an apprentice, war that changed sentiment, or simply were forgotten in time, words of power were not commonly spoken. Partially, this was due to Shkami. Shkami confounded many peoples and caused stupors of thought.   But magic continues to exist in Uinsil and none of the Ashun are prohibited from its use. Though there are those that struggle with the most minor extensions of their will, this may be attributed to other factors. Within Isfa, it is said that those who cannot cast magic are, "akin to those that hunt for shells on the beach without casting a line." For some it is education, others it is passivity (the tendency to draw inward than to expand or express). On the opposite side of the spectrum are those that feel the words deep within themselves, as though visions in a dream. These people may produce magical effects spontaneously and uncontrolled.   "Strong gems dwell within some that capture the essence of aged beings. And within them, words and equations are rehearsed. When the child hears the words in their minds, they cannot help but feed on them. And the words seek a way out. This to the great misfortune of those in the room." -Haralonian Patriach Zagros   Scholars of magic have long sought to discover the words of the lost days when the Heirs of the world walked among them. Using logic and equations, scholars attempt to find the pattern, the structure and intention of the sentence, that manifests magical products. Scholars have long sought those with the inherent abilities, hoping to tease out the words that were spoken. Rigorous records are kept, classified into different schools, practices, and requirements.   But beyond the scholars are the laws set forth long ago. Elements, building blocks of the worlds and perpetuaters of the Grand Cycle, dwell all around us. They are dormant, waiting to be awoken. Within the body are elements that vary by degree. These quiver and shake as the sovereign binds them together. When a caster uses magic, those elements stir to bind the essence. Once released, the essence is stable for some time before eventually losing its structure. The composition of the elements in the body may change the appearance of the magical products in color, shape, or power. The study of the elemental composition in the body is a branch of Elemental Survey.   Within most kingdoms and territories are scholars who devote themselves to the study of the arcane (the words of ancient days). Government sponsored research, guilds, and magewrights exercise daily to magnify their abilities. Outside of these places, tribal cultures rehearse the words of power through tradition. The Aior, walkers of the wood, learn the words of life from the primevil forests. Those who walk within deep places hear the vibrations of buried relics, whispering their secrets. Magic is discovered throughout Uinsil, and there are many secrets still yet undiscovered.     The Beginnings Before the nameless one awoke and started the Great Cycle, many worlds had come before. Worlds that were filled with magical creations, peoples, and machines. Among all of these places, the nameless one chose Samagri, a dormant world of made of ash. As the nameless one built this great battlefield, he buried great weapons inside. These weapons were embued with magic that bled out into the world. When Iyem attacked the nameless one at this throne, the weapons were forgotten. When the nameless one spoke the names of the Heirs, he provided a way for his goals to be met. For Samagri to be a great place of challenge.   The Heirs were created with a great purpose that was buried deep within them. Words of love and pain, to run and to chase. From these words, the Heirs would learn of the worlds that came before. And the emblem of the Jelakhav would shine over them. But for the Heirs, the Jelakhav was a mystery. From it, they felt the binding power and a terrifying nature.   And the Heirs set about their intentions. They filled the world with their words, with arguments, conversations, encouragement, and condemnation. Their passion would drive and scar the world. Their tempers would create mountains and cut great divides. But as they spoke, their stature would diminish. In time, the heirs of the world found that they had become small. And they feared the silver dagger of Ukt. And so many of the Heirs disappeared.   The Magister Matriarch   Anlienissa was one of the Taladin that remained by Tala and was her companion. Anlienissa loved Tala profoundly and watched as Tala consumed herself in her rage. And when Tala left, many of the Taladin were lost. Anlienissa gathered together her people and spoke words of comfort. From the stone, Anlienissa made a statue of Tala and the people gathered around. And the people sought favors from Anlienissa. For years, Anlienissa was the first Matriach of the Heir of Tala. For the people, she kept the words that Tala had spoken. And when words were confounded, they were not forgotten. It would be this that would cause Anlienissa to be revered. People came to hear her speak and she quickly became the center of the Taladin.   The Building of Haralon   As the Taladin multiplied, Anlienissa grew weary. The end of her days was coming as she felt herself wither. She gathered her closest companions and chose Aerenn, a woman of passion. And together, a child was to be conceived, "He will be named Zagros. And he will fulfill Tala's wishes." Aerenn would lead the people for many years, awaiting the arrival of Zagros. But Zagros was a fickle child and was not born until Aerenn's last days. Aerenn wept as she withered, fearing for Zagros. When her body finally broke, Zagros was born.   During the time of Aerenn, the people awaited Zagros. They gathered together and brought gifts. They celebrated each day, waiting for his birth. As the people came together, a city was raised: Haralon. Haralon would be the epicenter of the Taladin. The scattered peoples of the Isfa and Mashangist would pay their visits and offer gifts to Aerenn. The dwarves of Emtatuk and the Shunarites would visit to marvel at the city rising from the planes. For many, it was a pilgrimage to their ancient homelands, as all were Children of Tala. Through the age of Aerenn, Haralon grew into a place of plenty. People settled and worked the lands to bring Zagros gifts. Near to Aerenn's last days, the people began to founder. Aerenn was withered and old. Bells told of her passing and there was a silence throughout Haralon. It was then that a proclamation was made, "Zagros has been born!"   Many rumors circulated regarding Zagros' long gestation. Some rumored that he walked throughout the land in spirit. Others that he his body and mind were weak. But Zagros it was when Anlienissa passed that Zagros fell into a slumber. Even then, Zagros was left by his mother Anlienissa and believed the world to be a cruel place. Finally, when Aerenn neared her end, Zagros tasted a bitter truth. He would soon lose his other mother. Thus, Zagros was born an orphan. And yet, the people rejoiced.   While Zagros would hardly know joy throughout his life, within him stirred the magical gifts. Echoes sounded in his mind and the words of power came easy. Companions to Aerenn kept notes of every utterance and word, every action and failure. From this, arcane wisdom flourished. This would lead to many factions gaining power beyond their understanding. The seeds of that power would be inspire and destroy. Mages would be revered and feared.   The Archmages   Throughout the years, there would be those whose prowess in the practice of the arcane would be so prevalent that they would steer entire cultures. This best describes the archmages. Within Haralon, Zagros taught several pupils. With scorn in his heart for his mothers who had abandoned him, he selected only men for his pupils. Thus was the origins of the patriarchy, where Zagros was the first patriarch. The archmages who surrrounded him would be in line for the patriarchy. From among them, divination, words of power given by Guja, was used to identify the successor. This magic, however, was not that magic of Zakil the Heir of Truth or Agtodeir the Heir of Fate, but of Guja the Heir of Rumor and Myth. But even the archmages would not know this as they divined the ruling path.   There are those that argue that this would lead to the inevitable demise of Haralon. As the powers of divination grew their hunger for knowledge, the archmages (specifically Gregore) would walk down dangerous paths. Twelve patriarchs would lead Haralon before its destruction. The only clue to the destruction was a promise from Gregore to Illiam Castell. In this letter, Gregore claims to have discovered the potential of man. Suddenly, Haralon was utterly destroy. As worlds from the sky rained down on the land, Haralon became a vast waste. Millions were killed and the secrets of Haralon buried.   Patrons and Prayer   When the Heirs found that their power had dwindled, they hid themselves. Yet, those that seek for them may hear their voices and may be touched by them. By this time, the Heirs needed to regain their stature. But as the essence of living things was bound to the Gloaming Shroud by Bari, Gedu, and Graciure, they would need to draw the power back into themselves. For this, the Heirs gave the Ashun, Taladin, and Shunarites the words of bonding.   The words of bonding describes conveyance. The promise from the patron are gifts and blessings while the devout offers special prayers and sacraments. These prayers and sacraments actually convey essence from the devout to the patron. Through this means, the Heirs restore their power. As the devout proselyte and display the gifts and blessings they have received, others perform take part in the services. Thus, greater essence is brought to the Heirs.   But it is not just the Heirs that grow in this way. Words of bonding have resulted in the rising of folkgods. Folkgods are creatures that are worshipped by tribal groups or cults. Being blessed by essence, they have been able to achieve great statures. Salamander, during the time of Salanak, would be described as a folkgod (though it should be noted that Salamander did not offer blessings to his worshippers, but was reverred and praised).   The words of binding describe one of the most significant relationships within Uinsil. It shows that even the Heirs cannot fully remove themselves from the world. Thus, the Heirs who their servants to fulfill their purposes.   Places of Reckoning:   Within Uinsil, there are places where the arcane appear to behave differently than generally observed. This may occur due to the latent elements present in a particular location. In general, the common elements of fire, water, air, and geo are distributed in a regular, predictable manner. In places of reckoning, the common elements may become rare or be saturated with more uncommon elements.   Places of Silence: While places of silence are not, in fact, silent, they are elementally dark places. The presence of dark elements causes the rapid disintegration of untethered essence. Within these places, words of power falter. This is made manifest by the resistance of any projection of essence from any object, including people. If essence is projected into a place of silence, the essence is unraveled and dispersed.   "In places of silence, the monks of old would watch the essence flows. Confused, it would twist and churn seeking to be bound, but yet could not."   Places of Binding: In contrast to places of silence, places of binding are more problematic. As projected essence is released from the body, it is bound to order. While this projected essence will soon unravel in normal circumstances, in places of binding, the essence continues. Thus, a fire may burn continuously though there is no fuel. Those who enter into places of binding will feel the immediate effects of an enormous pressure. In long exposures, they will note that they begin to lose sensations from their appendages. Their senses will begin to fade. Eventually, the body will crumble around the body while the essence remains in apparitions of the person. "Foibel's Echo" is an example of this manifestation.   Pillared Light: Pillared Light describes a phenomena where periodic eruptions of light appear. Pillared Light is often seen as an column of discrete light that ascends into the sky before fading. Likened to lightning, Pillared Light is benign. The students of the arcane note that Pillared Light results from disorganized essence entered into place where elemental light absorbs the essence. Unable to store the essence for extended periods, the essence is projected outward. Some believe that Pillared Light is the mechanism by which essence returns to Aven to continue to light the world. It is, however, found that Pillared Light represent locations where gems and jewels sit near to the surface of the world.
