Rebirth

One of the long standing traditions of the people of Assiram is the tradition of rebirth. While the realm of Assiram lay within the twilight, there is a beautiful light deep within the cloistered caverns where the people dwell. Without the walls of the cloister, beasts that walk the line between the ethereal and the material stride. While beautiful to behold, they are dangerous and vengeful.   The rebirth is a tradition among the people of ????. As a coming of age, a child receives a mask. The mask embodies their spirit manifest as the creatures that lurk in the wood. These masks are crafted using techniques passed down through generations of shamans. These masks capture the essence of the creature that they portray, which acts as a protection for the bearer. While wearing the mask, the people of Assiram can navigate the woods without dark spirits seeking them out.   This tradition occurs when a child turns fifteen years of age. At this age, the child is brought to the moonwell where the scarlet light bleeds in through a vast channel into a sunken grotto. There, above the still water, the child is presented a mask. Once the child receives the mask, they are considered an adult. One of the first actions of adulthood is to venture into the woods to collect food for the tribe. During this time, which for these children will be the first time that they have left the safety of the tribe, the children will be able to see the creatures of Assiram for the first time.   During this period, the child will be instructed to collect herbs, fruits, and other vegetation that the tribe requires, walking calmly among the fauna and flora. The mask is able to hide the presence of one who dwells only in the material realm. When the child returns to the tribe, they are celebrated. It is during this tradition that the celebrated will first learn of the greater world in which they are a part and the spirit they embody.

Fascinating to imagine that first walk by the new adult...
