The Lethebas

A mostly unknown tradition within the Culvert Cachet, the Lethebas is a tradition in which debtors, criminals, or deviants that have acted in egregious ways are forced into a cave system far below the Culvert Cachet. Due to the ability of the Culvert Cachet to act sufficiently independent from Mashangist, the Lethebas remains a rumor on hushed lips within the circles of Mountebank. While this tradition remains shrouded in secrecy, it is employed to deal with those who have committed severe transgressions against Mountebank or the Culvert Cachet.   At the heart of the Lethebas tradition is the Judgment Hall, a somber foreboding chamber where the accused are brought before their trials. The hall is decorated with ominous statues that symbolize various criminal vices. Each statue represents a specific transgression or moral failing, such as greed, deceit, pride, or wrath. Before the trial begins, the convicted individual is chained to the statues. The intricated carved statues surround the hall while the judges look down from a platform above. At this point, the accused already begins contemplating what is to happen next.   The process is designed to be psychologically tormenting. The accused are forced to face down what they have become. They have debased themselves and are inexcusable. Their physical restraints serving as a constant reminder of their failing. After a summary judgment typically offered by Mountebank himself, heavy gears begin to spin, lowering the entire stage into the Lethebas Cave System. The statues suspend the accused into the depths.   The convected are exiled to the Lethebas cave system. This underground network is a teacherous and disorienting labyrinth, designed to serve as both a prison and a place of penance. With narrow passages, the damp environment is constantly unsettling. The constant threat of falling rocks and sudden drops instills unending terror in those that wander therein. Among the circles of Mountebank, there are rumors that none have escaped the Lethebas, either having gone mad or disappeared entirely. However, Mountebank has suggested that there is a way out that none has ever taken. None have ever confronted their sin and found the light within.
