Witherwort

The witherwort was recorded as one of the first waves of diseases that drifted from the Dendendekaden forest. It has been described as a spore released from fungal wards that consume parts of the woods that have been destroyed. The spores, resembling small shards of wood drift on the wind. When these spores land on essence rich material, such as a living organism, will burrow under the skin and take root. Once the spore takes root, it begins to leech off of the host, extending its roots as it destroys the body as it expands.   The host will feel slight tingling sensations as the spore first takes root. This is the optional time to remove the spore. Once the spore spreads within the body, more extensive and painful measures are required.   The worst event related to witherwort occured during the first attempt at clearing the outermost reach of the Dendendekaden forest. As loggers cut through acres of trees, a howl of pain blasted from the Deerwood. As the loggers fled to regroup, a tempestuous wind blew over the territory. The spores, first believed to be debris from the strong gale, went unnoticed. Soon, most of the camp began experiencing a drained feeling. One of the first victims recalled seeing what appeared to be roots near to the surface of his skin. Panic spread as many would lose feeling in their appendages. Many would resort to cutting off limbs they feared were infected. As the limbs were shed, the now adolescent witherwort trees would burrow themselves into the ground.   The logging camp slowly became what is called the deadwood, as none of the original loggers or their families escaped. Terror spread to nearby settlements calling on the government to find a cure before anymore expeditions would be undertaken. The appearance of the witherwort marked the beginning of the struggle between the living forest and the people of Mashangist.
