Wraith's Attrition

Wraith's attrition is one of the most reputable names for a situation where the parallel (soul) and the sovereign (body) begin a process of disjoining caused by the lack of strength in the parallel to maintain the structure of the sovereign. In general, the parallel maintains the form of the body, rebuilding it as it is able or changing its form to survive. In cases where the body undergoes significant damage, the parallel may elect to change its form to survive rather than struggle to maintain a broken shape. However, in the cases of Wraith's Attrition, the parallel of the afflicted person seems to struggle to maintain a clear picture of the structure that they were maintaining. Therefore, overtime, the body starts to decay as the elements are unbound.
Normal treatments for this requires cleansing spiritual magic that is directly able to target the parallel. While most binding magic (healing) aims at repairing the body and replacing lost essence to ease the burden on the parallel, the required healing is required to remove the addling of the parallel. This advanced healing is often left to those that have delved into the understanding of both the Gloaming Shroud and the basis of life. While the study of this requires significant personal investment, it is not something that can be achieved without personal experience. Clerics capable to performing this are often part of clergy or sects that actively perform rituals of introduction into their order. While difficult and taxing, the understanding is not unavailable to anyone seeking greater knowledge.
If the parallel is healed from the ailment, it will struggle to put together the body. This means that the cleric who has healed the individual must be cautious in not killing the individual. An already weakened body may struggle too much to take on its complete from and die. Therefore, multiple healers are generally present providing "essence infusion" techniques to supplement the afflicted person's sovereign.
The cause of a Wraith's Affliction varies, with the symptoms being attributed to the Wraith's Affliction as opposed to unique diseases. A wraith, will-o-wisp, or other possessing creature may access the parallel directly. This assault often contends for possession of the sovereign. If the subject succumbs, the parallel of the individual will be severed from their body. In this event, they may become a ethereal being (such as a wraith) or wake up in the Gloaming Shroud and thus disconnected from the mortal plane. However, in some cases, there is no evidence of the presence of a Wraith. Rather it appears that the addling of the parallel occurs naturally. There are herbolists that have made the connection between the composition of the body and the inability of the parallel to maintain it. It is assumed that diet, disease, and even physique may play a role in the advance of the Wraith's Attrition, though this perhaps should fall under a different category.
