Slate Glass

Slate Glass is a composite of Katarised Glass and Obsidian used to create Slates, Screens, and other communicative technologies used in the Amnari Alliance Exclusion Zones. It has the kata capacity of obsidian but the lightness of the specialist, strengthened glass developed by Artificers to make it easier for Amnari to carry and use their slates.   Because slates are recycled in toto where possible, slate glass is both tough but light, which makes it easier to carry, use, but also to be cleansed of katarised data and passed on to the next user. Slate glass can also be returned to Artificers if improvements are made to the manufacture of the material, so slates, once made, can be altered to take advantage of new developments in the material technology.

History & Usage

History

The development of the most effective material for slates has a long and complex history. All Amnari have and use slates, so they have to be both light but strong enough to cope with accidents, damage, and breakage. They must also be capable of functioning within the Matrix but not be affected by the unstable kata produced by a Gap when active. Because Warriors and Watchers, as well as auxiliary professions, carry and use their slates on the line, they are frequently exposed to high levels of unstable kata.   Slates were originally composed of obsidian, which was the best material for carrying katarised data, but it was heavy and difficult to take onto the Line. Slates quickly became some of the most frequently used items within and beyond the Alliance, which meant developing a material that was both light but also capable of functioning effectively within a Matrix in a variety of conditions. Artificers have long been researching the best material for this, and combining the specialised glass used in Exclusion Zones for larger screens, with obsidian has so far proved to be the most effective for individual slates.
