Khara
Called "The land of unbreakable earth," the Khara Desert is a broken, cursed wasteland that draws the life from all those who pass through it. Nobody navigates Khara and emerges alive.
Geography
The Khara Desert is a salt flat occupying the very heart of the sunswept lands. Its southern reaches the foothills of the Koh mountains. In the west it meets the rocky hills and badlands of the Priest Kingdoms. To the north and east it gives way to the Budana Desert.
Near its outlying reaches Khara consists of a nearly solid crust of salt upon the land. It reflects light like a hideous mirror, blinding those who look directly at it. Formations can rise up to six feet tall, otherworldly crystalline formations of pure salt. Though salt is precious, the land is unfriendly to all. The intense alkaline content of the salt flat makes it harmful to livestock and it will eat through boots quickly enough. There is no water to be found for miles in any direction and to most, no safe paths to follow.
Ecosystem
There is very little obvious wildlife in Khara. Any water present is deep underground, drawn up via capillary action to deposit its salt into the bizarre formations making up the wasteland then evaporating into thin air. Birds fly over it without landing.
Ecosystem Cycles
The salt formations grow at a rate of about 1 inch every seven years. No life makes its home here.
Localized Phenomena
The salt glimmers in the sunlight, making it impossible to look at directly and blinding birds who fly overhead. Undead--the remnants of foolish travelers who sought to cross the dreaded wasteland--wander in agony, seeking moisture to draw from living beings to salve their pain. Salt mephits and bizarre elementals pass through mysterious pathways between the worlds.
