Miamaer
One of the four most powerful families in Andarud Refuge, House Miamaer has a reputation of practically applying the spells and swords crafted by the other families. Named for a bladesinger whose feats of swordplay and battle magic helped found the Refuge, even when no Miamaer abjurers number amongst the Cothromoir Miamaer remains prominent and powerful.
Structure
In each generation, a single heir of the main Miamaer line earns the right to name their descendents An'Miamaer. That heir will select from among their heirs who will pass the primary heritage forward. All other descendents become Na'Miamaer, rather than An'Miamaer. Moreso than the other great families, Miamaer tends to have two, sometimes even three children in each generation, and withholds the inheritance until all the potential heirs have reached the age of majority and have a chance to prove themselves.
While there is no law stating as such, it is traditional for An' or Na'Miamaer warriors to hold the positions of General, Warden, Marshal and sometimes Enforcer within the Refuge. Since the inception of the refuge they've run the finest dueling academies and schools of warfare.
Culture
Miamaer strives for a meritocratic culture, where those who prove themselves most skilled and useful to the family receive the greatest praise, the most resources, and the most responsibility, becoming accountable for the wellbeing of the entire family, including those who struggle with health issues, lack of opportunity or struggles of the soul. While competitive, they frown on blustering and bravado. It is in deed, not word, they trust, and when they brag they brag silently. With words be sweet, with steel be sure.
