Mental characteristics
Personal history
Ruby was born in Bronthan Capital in the year 6848 to an unknown mother and father, and was adopted by one of the Elders and raised in and around the temples and palaces in the capital. All that is known about her parents is that one is or was an important figure on Brontha, and the other was an elf who was not supposed to be there.
The unique combination of her elven and priestly heritage gave her a unique gift of magic that might have been heralded had she not been of such unknown parentage, and not been completely overshadowed by the presence of another blessed child born less than a year before her.
Instead, she served as an assistant to her adopted father, or to anyone her adopted father told her to assist, which sometimes involved being around the very blessed child some saw her as a pale imitation of. When not on duty, she would spend much of her free time worshiping Zeilar and studying the teachings of the Brothan faith in preparation for her to join the priesthood when she came of age.
It was only after that child had gone missing and was presumed dead did attention finally shift to Ruby in a meaningful way. While negative comparisons to the original blessed child were expected, it was ultimately the scandal of her parentage that was too great for the leadership of Brontha to bear, and it was decided that she should be sent to Ioth Academy. The reason she was given was so that she could receive the best magical education available and return better able to help serve and defend her country (even though she could have easily received sufficient training and education in Brontha). In reality, they just needed to get rid of her. While some, including her adopted father, hope she will in fact return and be such a force in the service of Brontha that any past scandal she is a reminder of will be brushed aside, most do not care if she returns or would even prefer that she doesn't, and are proceeding under the assumption that she won't.
Education
Received a primarily religious education in Brontha, before being sent to the Academy, where she was unexpectedly placed in the Grotto.
She is a dedicated student, but otherwise unremarkable in her studies.
Electives:
Painting
Spiritualism
Supernatural Philosophy
Advanced Elemental Studies
Overworld Studies
Accomplishments & Achievements
Defeated Athalor in the dueling tournament.
Mental Trauma
Despite her adopted father being a respected Elder in Brontha, she was still treated as an outcast by many important figures there.
None took the loss of Bronth's blessed child as hard as she did, though she was forced to mourn alone, and soon after she became the subject of all kinds of behind the scenes attention from the Elders, which ultimately resulted in her departure to Ioth Academy.
Morality & Philosophy
Devout adherent to the principles of Zeilar: Law, Purity, Truth, Bravery, and Sacrifice.
She believes her odd placement in the Grotto was meant to be, as it lead her to meeting, helping, and befriending Dubin.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
She was subject to many unfavorable comparisons to the Blessed Child during her time in Brontha, even more so after the child was lost, thus she is determined to prove herself a devout and capable servant of Zeilar and Brontha.
Personality Quirks
Despite her normally measured nature, she may (politely) swear at someone in Sylvan or Undercommon (if she thinks they won't understand).
Social
Contacts & Relations
Dubin is her best friend and roommate. She cares and looks out for him and protects him, usually from himself.
Though she is undoubtedly friends with Luteti, she can't bring herself to fully trust his intentions, especially when it comes to Dubin.
Family Ties
Her adopted father is a well-respected figure in Brontha, though he often finds himself at odds with the other Elders. Ruby writes to him regularly.
Her true parents are unknown to her, though apparently problematic enough that the Elder Council want to keep it a secret.
Religious Views
She is a devout follower of the Zeilarian Faith.
Mannerisms
Puts on an air of confidence. Would be more socially reserved, but as Dubin has started to come out of his shell as he re-gains confidence, Ruby has been making an effort to keep up.
Speech
Measured, relatively eloquent.

A private letter addressed to General Tohsaka
Bui the 3rd of Emberheart, 6833
[The letter is sealed with wax formed into the shape of a phoenix. The middle bears the mark of Garnet's signet ring turned sideways.]
To the Esteemed General Meresan Tohsaka
My name is Ruby, and I am currently a student at Ioth Academy, but before that, I was a junior acolyte within the great temple of Brontha and on occasion had the unparalleled honor of serving as a handmaiden to your daughter. She is the reason I am urgently writing you now. Your daughter recently gave me the honor of leading her in a private prayer to the Sun Rider, a request I was most gratified to fulfill, especially given the dark and unusual nature of the power she now manifests. Though I found the session to be uniquely fulfilling, I could tell she left it feeling disappointed. I know she is probably used to services that I am neither worthy nor fully able to give, but in this case I think it was due to something else. She said something strange as we were starting: "Let me know if you see him too." I don't think she was referring to the Phoenix himself, but I'm not sure who-, or what-, else it could have been.
Having personally witnessed the darkness that she wields, I worry greatly over her and the path she now walks. Though I dare not approach her unprompted, it is my utmost desire to serve as a guide on her path back into the Sun's light. When next she approaches me, which I assume she will because she left her family - your family - signet ring with my shrine after the prayer (apologies for using it to mark this letter, but I had to be sure it would be treated with the proper urgency and privacy given its subject), I hope I am better able to serve her spiritual needs when that time comes.
To that end, I wish to receive your counsel about how best to see to her needs and how I may guide her path. Perhaps you know of the "him" she refers to?
There are rumors abound that Brontha is preparing to march on Bothotlo. If this is true, then I pray that you remain safe. As Garnet does not seem to adhere to the teachings of the cycle as much as she once did, I fear for how she might react to the news of your passing to the next phase. I fear especially that it may drive her ever further into arms of the darkness she has come to embrace since her father passed. Though I know that I should not mourn when the day that ushers the passing Flame Father Gallus comes, for death is an inevitable part of life, I know that I will mourn. That I will feel pain and loss. I cannot imagine how much worse it would be, how much worse it has been, for your daughter, as her will is no longer as guided and strengthened by the light of the day as it once was, and her loss would be, and has been, of those that directly gave her life.
Flames Guide Your Path,
Ruby, daughter of Flame Father Gallus
A rushed letter home
Keeper Gallus
Father, you'll never believe what's happened! Do you remember how I told you about how there was a student here named Garnet? Well that IS HER. IT'S ACTUALLY GARNET. I can't believe it. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but coming here to the Academy wasn't her choice. It might be connected to why she he wields some sort of shadow magic now, but the light of Zeilar is still inside her, I've felt it. I'll try to talk to her more, soon... perhaps once I've calmed down some.

A Letter to Brontha
To Fire Keeper Gallus, Senior Diviner
Dear Father,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am settled into Tarselmoor House with Dubin. I am glad the caretakers were able to see past the rumors that he and I are an 'item'. I was also pleasantly surprised when he asked me to set up a candle for him at shrine to Zeilar I erected in our room.
I signed up for a magical dueling tournament set to take place around mid-terms. I don't really have time to dedicate to combat training after joining the Theological Society, but I still think it is important to test myself in such an arena, particularly if I am expected to defend Brontha in battle once I return. The group sponsoring the tournament is called the Codex, they are a group of high performing students, which sounds nice, but there are also rumors of them getting up to some weird activities, but not getting in trouble. I'm not sure what I would choose to do if they asked me to join. Though it sounds like it could be nice be able to join them, I don't think I can be associated with them if they are up to dubious activities, and I don't want any more activities taking away from the time I spend with Dubin. Despite the progress he has made, I still wish to spend as much time with him as possible.
One of the competitors, and a member of The Codex, is named Garnet. Could you imagine if that was actually her? The Blessed Child returned to us? Part of me can't help but hope that it is, that she is alive and well, and perhaps we finally be friends and work together to do some good in this world like I always wanted to. But I know that's just a dream, and spending too much energy thinking about it will just lead to more disappointment and sorrow.
I still look forward to the day I can return to Brontha and help our people fight the infernals, and to the day where you receive your long overdue elevation to Elder and to the Council.
Praise be to Zeilar,
Ruby
