SC2024: A tumultuous region prone to natural disasters

The Torrood Forest is a large, northernly forest on Jagodo that is prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters such as large-scale floods. Despite these frequent disasters, the forest is inhabited by a large number of Jagodoans who farm the nutrient-rich soil unearthed by the floods, and have adapted their permanent structures to withstand the quakes.

Danger Zone

Within the Torrood Forest, the danger of high-magnitude earthquakes increases drastically as you approach Lanse River, the largest of the rivers flowing down from Lake Lie, thanks to the river's prominent position on a major fault known as the Lanse Line.   The Lanse Line is the most tectonically active fault on Jagodo, with an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude or higher at least once per year, with major damage up to 250 kilometers away. The Jagodoan people have refused to build permanent structures within 200 kilometers of the Lanse River, and thus the Lanse Line, since the Kan Qui Disaster of 2268.

Flooded Farming

Agriculture in the Torrood Forest focuses primarily on crops that require large amounts of water and nutrients to grow to maturity. This forest is the primary supplier of paper reed on Jagodo, and produces enough paper to export to other planets.   Almost all the crops produced on Jagodo are not digestible by non-Jagodoans due to their toughness and high arsenic content. The exception to this rule, Blushberry, is grown exclusively in the Torrood Forest, and exported in the form of preserves to nearby planetary systems, as well as used as rations on ships.   Aquaculture is another important staple to Torroodian agriculture, as the sea grasses grown on the western coasts of the forests are a local delicacy. The aquatic life farmed includes many species of fish, some crustaceans, and even a species of mollusc known as the Torroodian Chitonsquid.
