Divinity, Belief, and the Absence of Miracles
With the gods locked away in their planes, and the Divine Gates sealed, divine magic is a rare thing these days. While those divine magic classes still exist, the magic they are able to perform is not as powerful as in ages passed. While the inspiration of knowing they are endorsed or encouraged by their God often inspires mortals to perform incredible feats, the unfortunate truth is that the Gods can functionally do very little.
Miracles are a thing of the past. The last known miracle was performed over a thousand years ago, and before that was a thousand more. The Divine Gates rarely ever allowed the Gods to travel, but it allowed their power to reach other planes. Now, they can only barely reach the Astral Sea to send messages to ferrymen.
Belief is a tangible thing in the Divine Planes. The more a God is worshiped the more they are able to feast. This feast is then translated into power, which once upon a time translated to that God's effect on the Material Plane. Nowadays, the most they're able to do is send their emissaries, is, or imbue a soul with power before it is born into a mortal form.
Most people of the cloth who do have magical abilities do not gain their magic from divine sources but from natural sources. However their devotion is still very important as it gives their God's power. There is still residual divine energy left in the Material Plane, which is how consecration of new items and areas is possible. However some spells and phenomenon are unavailable on the material plane, such as the wish spell and, of course, miracles. If a God requires something to be done on the Material Plane, they would send an emissary. Alternately, they can craft a soul that will be born into the Material Plane to carry out their will. This is a very costly endeavor, but every God has done it at least once. These divine souls are not necessarily sorcerers, but can be of any class and can come from any walk of life. They usually are not members of a religious order, and their purpose is not to spread worship but to accomplish a specific goal. These individuals have a variety of names but more often than not you can call them avatars.
