The Divine Cycle

The Divine Cycle is a seemingly never-ending and unstoppable phenomenon that has effected all divine beings in the universe. The cause is unknown, and despite many attempts, no one has been able to slow or halt the process.
Every four centuries, without fail, almost to the day, every single known god dies. This is preceded by about a century of very slowly waning power, ending in a very sudden end. Those mortal individuals previously blessed with divine magic are severely weakened. Those who were particularly close to their gods may even go mad with the sudden absence. Items and places become known as "Wells," for the previously bottomless font of magic they drew from now has a limit.
For a period of about a century, the Planes must survive without any divine intervention of assistance. This is a time of great upheaval, as the rarity of divine magic tends to see those who wield it in power. Countries and other political powers tend to dissolve or weaken during this time, which is known as "the Dark Period."
Then, seemingly spontaneously, a new pantheon of gods will be born, and the world will be put to rights again. These new gods will immediately reveal their presence to the Planes through divine magic, allowing the Planes to worship and strengthen them once again.
