Episode 19: Interlude, The Silent Year
General Summary
Originally, this wasn't going to be cataloged as an episode, but a fun little extra bit. But now there are c̨̩͇̦̩̺͓̞͖ͦ͒̑̓̿̏o̷̝̞͙̺͎͕̤̟̽ͮ̈́ͤ̑͗̑͢͠ṋ͓̥͙͇͉̻̫̱̒ͭ͘s̶̲͈̃̈̉̓̂ͬ̆̎ͤ́ė̛̟̺̠͋͟q̖͚͓̯̤̪̺̦̖ͬ̔̐ͦͯ͞ṳ̧͍͐̀͗̋̉̀e̴͆͒ͬ̅̃́̆͗͏͈̞͔̫̥͉̳n̞̤̭͖͛͂̓ç̡̛͚͇͍̗̇ͮ͌̈͋ͧe̛̯͍͚̦̪̤͚ͫ̑ͫͬ͝ş̟̘̗̣̬͍̺̃͢͡.
Removed from the linear chronological flow, the Rose Protectorate now suffers the time dilation of the Feywild. For a while now, they have seen the might of the Winter Queen approaching. While the weather grows colder, the citizens of Franrider are left with this: a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to build the community up and learn again how to work together. Come Winter, the Queen of Air and Darkness will come, and the town might survive the encounter. This is when their time will end. But they known not of that yet. What they do know is that right now, in this moment, there is an opportunity to build something.

Currently, the city of Franrider consists of a large river that flows through the center, the Academy of Divine Arts headed by Ilyana Dawnbringer, the estate of the esteemed Dawnbringer House, an orphanage run by Mother, and a bakery, with several acres of fertile land surrounding it. And of course, none can forget about Big Boulder, the mysterious spherical lump of marble that resides in the very center of town. There are also many acres of woods surrounding the city, home to a wealth of magical creatures, not all of whom are friendly. The town is governed by houses Dawnbringer and Dawnbreaker, the former running the executive side of administration, and the latter running the more hands-on activities, both in town and abroad. While Dawnbreaker was the original house, some time ago Dawnbringer splintered off following an unfavorable election. House Dawnbringer is headed by Zantelar Dawnbringer, and has begun to usurp House Dawnbreaker in administrative power in the recent years. Since Ailim Dawnbreaker's mysterious disappearance three years ago, House Dawnbreaker has suffered a lack of guidance, and has for the most part retreated to their studies in the Academy.
Week 2, the Missionary. A travelling caravan arrives in town, carrying three merchants from the Fulminarian Empire. In order to accommodate them, the town begins to craft a modest trading post, with room to house a small party for a while with somewhere to sell their wares.
Week 3, the Shepherd. A young group of orphans begins to notice that there is weird tropical vegetation and flora beginning to bloom in the forest.

Week 4, the Healer. One night, there is a large crash heard outside of the Academy as a huge tower plummeted from the sky and lodged itself in the ground. Luckily, no one was hurt in the fall. The Academy launches an expedition into the tower to explore its depths upon the discovery that it is bigger on the inside.
Week 5, the Monk. Political shifts within the houses at this time secure the notion that Dawnbringer does the commanding, Dawnbreaker does the soldiering work. The Bazaar is completed, offering room for two caravans and their wares to stay and trade.
Week 6, the Traitor. Casandra Dawnbreaker, a young student from the Academy, goes into the Tower and stumbles across a forecasting globe, discovering winter may be coming sooner than they think, and so she she begins attempting to create a new technology or magic in order to survive the winter. She is joined by many students, slowing down the progress of the Tower exploration.
Week 7, the Druid. In the Tower, some of the researchers find disturbing legends about the land they live on currently. Namely, that it used to be a holy land for a deity that is no longer named in modern times, and there may be much more to the land than there appears. Furthermore, since around the time the Tower fell, there has been an inexplicable, faint ringing noise that happens every Thursday at 10:21 p.m. that isn't perceptible to all townsfolk.
Week 8, the Anarchist. There are a select group of extremely old Dawnbringer and Dawnbreaker elders who have begun to give insight to the community with the wisdom and knowledge they have gained after their many years of study, knowledge far above any other in their respective fields of study. However, they do not embark on any dangerous tasks, only watching over the community as a whole.
The people who do embark on dangerous tasks are the rambunctious youngsters from the Orphanage. Squiddly, Nat, and Jenks spotted a tree in the distance far taller than all the rest, and miles away. They leave on their own to investigate.
Week 9, the Tempter. In the forest, there is a whole discovered, housing a disgusting pile of flesh with a huge in in the center. It doesn't do anything, it's just sitting there. Menacingly.
Inside the Tower, the exploration ends in tragedy. While exploring, they reached the end of the Tower where it had disconnected from Zhestia, where the stabilizing spatial magic was not so stable, and a group of six of the younger researchers fell into a liminal abyss, and are presumed dead. This lead to a fervent discussion about the Tower, with many outspoken individuals in town believing it too dangerous, and that it should be isolated. However, the Academy believed it is imperative to continue to investigate because it could hold their salvation. Barnebus Dawnbreaker, elder of the House, agrees, stating that it could hold items of great value, and the traders agree. The Guildmasters of the city believe that these lives lost are already too many, but concede that they are clearly outvoted.
Week 10, the Innocent. A dark shape is spotted behind the Aurora Totalis, seemingly trained in on the town. The Academy begins to look deeper into it. In the woods, Squiddly and Jenks stumble into loose gravel, dirt, and grass, falling three stories into some sort of crypt. While their are objects they can feel radiating magic around them, they are unharmed. Nat continues on to the tree, beguiled by Fey magic and unaware her companions have left her.
Week 11, the Charlatan. After the discovery of the Flesh Pit becomes public knowledge, everyone wants somewhere safer to sleep. Against Headmaster Ilyana Dawnbringer's better judgement, everyone is brought into the dormitories of the Academy. When taking a headcount, they notice that three children from the orphanage are missing, and launch an investigation into finding them.
Week 12, the Donjon. In the crypt, Squiddly came across an interesting treasure in a bound leather box, almost the size of a Deck. Inside a fur-lined interior, Squiddly finds a silver coin with a locked door icon emblazoned on the back. Back in town, they are quickly realizing that the dorms cannot hold everyone, and they launch an effort to expand the living quarters.
Speaking of expansion, Cassandra Dawnbreaker uncovers the means to cast spatial magic. Using this knowledge, she begins to create demiplanes in which the town can plant crops sustainably through the winter, and teaching it to the other mages.
Week 13, the Bishop. One day, while some of the young wizards were playing with their new spatial magic, they shifted the Mysterious Big Boulder in the middle of town, revealing the unlit entrance to a ruin, appearing to be of Dwarvish make below the town. At the same time, there is a flash of light in the forest, and a huge mass of floating black sand appears above the forest floor.

In other news, a drunk conglomerate of townsfolk take it upon themselves to scoop out the Flesh Pit and destroy it. They are never seen again, but the Pit does seem larger the next morning.
Week 15, the Miser. The search party, headed by Remnik, returns successful. Squiddly and Jenks have been rescued from the crypt, however, Nat is still missing, and more individuals go missing within the Flesh Pit. The Academy, specifically the Headmaster herself, begin to look into this object behind the Totalis.
Week 16 the Merchant. Barnebus Dawnbreaker contracts the Dark Blight, and all projects within the community cease momentarily to find the source of the disease, as the Blight has never existed in this area before. The Mother, panicking for Nat's sake, begins an attempt to find her using magic.
Week 17, the Philanthropist. Another citizen, Maria Silvers, comes to the attention of the community because she has also has contracted the Dark Blight. A discussion is held to discuss what should be done with those with the Dark Blight. Barnebus is the first to speak, saying they should be pampered. But, the Aristocrats, Academics, Merchants, and even the Guildmasters believe they should be quarantined. The first three believe they should be given a new community outside of the city, but the Guildmasters refuse to build it, saying no one should be exiled for something out of their control.
Week 18, the Executioner. In the forest, Nat discovers a party of lost Eladrin in the tree. Back in town, a group of Guildmasters descend into the Dwarven Ruin to perform a preliminary investigation.
Week 19, the Artifact. The leader of the Aristocrats, Zachariah Comstock, goes missing, and the Flesh Pit looks a bit bigger. The rest of the Aristocrats begin a movement to get rid of the Pit.
Week 20, the Guild Member. Nat and the Eladrin return to town. The Mother is elated, but the townsfolk are skeptical. Cassandra believes the Eladrin should be allowed to stay if they wish, but it would be wise to get to know them more, and be cautious with them because they are of the Fey. Barnebus believes that he Eladrin should be kept around to investigate the surrounding area. However, the Guildmasters again dissent, stating that they have enough strangers in town already, not to mention they are of the Feywild, the very place that the town is preparing to defend against. The Academy ultimately weighs the deciding opinion, stating that they should be kept around, cautiously, to help prepare against the Winter Court, as since they are of the Summer Court and they would know how to best defend against the Winter Fey.
Week 21, the Rogue. Finishing the renovations on the Academy, a member of the House Dawnbringer private guard "stumbles" onto a cache of ancient weapons and armor. Meanwhile, Remnik is out, looking into the dry patches in the river he discovered 20 weeks ago. They've gotten bigger, and have black, fleshy tendrils growing out of them.
In her office, Ilyana discovers that the shape they have all been seeing is a ship that is slowly turning down towards Andali.
Week 22, the Swashbuckler. The Guildmasters are becoming increasingly unhappy that they are repeatedly asked to complete tasks within the community, but their own voice has gone unheard within meetings. At a point of this contention, they were asked to investigate the tendrils upstream. The denied the request, and the mages were sent instead.

Week 23, the Thief. In the wake of the previous weeks disagreement, the Guildmasters discover a wealth of defensive siege weaponry in the ruins below the Big Boulder. The entire group moves below the city, into the Citadel, separating from the rest of the city. The mass of floating black sand explodes at this time, forming a veritable army of black sand golems with precious magical gems at their core.
Week 24, the Marionette. Dexter Stormfist, leader of the Guildmasters, gets into a fight with the Infected Barnebus and Maria. Afterwards, he begins to allocate space within the Citadel, the holding cells, to quarantine the Blighted individuals.
Week 26, the Evoker. After many months with the Silver Coin, Squiddly has changed. He has begun to speak to the coin, and something has shifted within him. In happier news, Ilyana and the rest of the mages have found a way to begin to destroy the tentacles in the river.
Week 27, the Broken One. The first sign of winter comes to town. A maelstrom of whipping winds and arcane chaos blasts through town, tearing up the fields and lodging the Mysterious Big Boulder in the open position. Because of this, the quarantine fails, but all the black sand golems were sucked up. The community meets to discuss what they should do now that it has failed and what they should prioritize next. The entire community, for the most part, agrees that they should hunker, building arcane warding to protect from any more maelstroms. Zantelar Dawnbringer and Dexter Stormfist agree for the first time ever in that the Aristocrats should be removed from the city.

Week 28, the Transmuter. Following the successful removal of the tendrils, the mages begin to comb the river to ensure that the Dark Blight is purged from the water supply. In the center of town, one of the Eladrin, Reylin Lazvien, begins to attempt to transmute the Fey tree, teleporting it to the center of town so they can focus their warding around it.
Week 29, the Wizard. Everyone wakes in the morning to see that the Flesh Pit is gone, and the leader of the Aristocrats is back. Not enough questions are asked about this and the Aristocrats begin to move all of the treasures into the Citadel.
Week 30, the Seer. Squiddly helps Reylin in his studies, greatly advancing the transmutation timeline. One of the mages witnessed Zantelar Dawnbringer holding a clandestine meeting in the hedge maze behind the Dawnbringer estate with a group of seven individuals.
Week 31, the Conjurer. Scholars from the Academy finally stumble across the exterior closing mechanism for the Mysterious Big Boulder buried. Just in time, too, as the sudden help from Squiddly has brought the Tree to its new resting place, in the center of town, where the Fey growth intermingles with the dwarven technology to create an unassailable, vaulted bunker for the winter months to come. After integrating the Mysterious Big Boulder vault door into the Tree, preparations begin for the magical warding and constructs to protect them from the coming winter.
Week 32, the Elementalist. The Entourage of Queen Mab arrives. They spread the word of the Winter Court, telling everyone how great life will be under the guidance of the Winter Queen. The Eladrin are lead by Elias Volholt, and are all Winter Eladrin. The community holds a discussion together, assessing how much of a threat Queen Mab truly is. Universally, they agree that she is bad news, and the entire town begins the move to belowground.

Week 33, the Illusionist. While the warding project has suffered some hits, no longer covering the whole town and being limited to the Tree and Citadel below. But, Cassandra and her assistants have begun to expand the demiplanes within the dwarven city, setting up sustainable farmland for the winter.
Week 34, the Abjurer. The arcane warding comes to a climactic early conclusion when Squiddly, evidently fulfilling a requirement of the wards known only to him and his Coin, kill Barnebus Dawnbreaker within the Soulforge in the city's workshops. An emergency meeting is held to discuss what to do with him, and while some members of the community would burn the witch as it were, Remnik and Dexter come to his defense and propose they are lenient with the possessed child, opting to lock him up in the "care" of the Aristocrats.
Week 35, the Diviner. Strange bodies are found deep within the mine, leading to the idea that this may have been a duergar colony, not a dwarven citadel as first thought. While some citizens, namely Dexter, believed that they should do a headcount, Zantelar and the wizards said they should just dispose of them and move on, they do not have time to deal with unrecognized bodies right now.
Week 36, the Necromancer. One of the Winter Court Eladrin attempts to sabotage the Vault mechanisms, leading to a brief verbal skirmish, in which Elias Volholt steps in to settle the disagreement, marking the perpetrator as a "misguided youth." However, it is also during this time that the population of the Vault realizes just how many Winter Eladrin have moved in, and the issue was dropped after a not-so-subtle stand off.
Week 38, the Horseman. It's been overcast for some time now, but as the final townsfolk are moving below, a ray of sun shines down upon the town for what many think may be the last time.
Week 39, the Dictator. The Winter Eladrin press further in, leading to the first real skirmish with them. No lives are lost in the brief fight, but Dexter organizes an initiative to pull out some of the siege equipment to be used as defenses.
Week 40, the Hooded One. The Winter weather is here, and the people are not taking it well. For many of them, this is the first time they've experienced anything like this, living in the climate controlled Rose Protectorate like they had. They are not fans. While clearing out their homes, under the watchful eye of House Dawnbreaker, the citizens are beginning to realize that the Winter Eladrin have taken over their homes.
Week 41, the Torturer. Squiddly has gone missing, leaving in his place a second coin, this one emblazoned with the Mark of Flames. He was last seen with an unidentified group of six adventurer looking types, as well as Zantelar Dawnbringer and a sizeable contingent of Dawnbringer guards. They were spotted heading deeper into the uncharted portions of the duergar structures and have not been heard from since.
Week 42, the Soldier. At long last, moving finishes. Under pressure from encroaching Winter Eladrin forces, the Academy uses spatial magic to temporarily enhance the size of one of the barracks within the complex to house everyone while they get moved in. The Guildmasters have successfully brought the ancient duergar weaponry into the roots, where a number of barricades and ballista are arranged.
Week 43, the Paladin. Zachariah Comstock begins to build a water purifying plant in the underground lake after failing to find the means to approach the serpent.
Week 44, the Warrior. In a last ditch attempt to try and save the town from even needing to worry about winter, the wizards of the Academy and the Summer Eladrin work together to attempt to create a giant teleportation circle that would get them out of Winter's Path.
Week 45, the Mercenary. Dexter Stormfist uncovers the Aristocrats attempting to form a monopoly on clear drinking water and distilled liquors, interrupting their capitalist scheming.
Week 46, the Myrmidon. On the surface, the last vestiges of Franrider are taken over by the Winter Eladrin, finally cutting them off from the outside world, save their defensive palisades. The pastries of the bakery will be missed.
Week 47, The Darklord. Winter has come, and the new citadel of Solhiem is well prepared. The Silent Year has ended.

Week 1, the Priest. In the community of Franrider, the belief of the Wanderer holds the houses together. However, some have different ideas of what the Wanderer's desires are. Remnik Dawnbreaker, captain of the House Dawnbreaker guard, noticed the first signs of Winter's wrath approaching; the river that had supplied them with clean drinking water for so long has begun to develop dry spots.Week 2, the Missionary.

Summer
Week 14, the Beggar. More outsiders arrive, declaring them the Artisans and Aristocrats of the Rose Protectorate, and they are going to collect and preserve rare art pieces, flora, and fauna. They are not received well because they are taking everyone's art to "consolidate" it.In other news, a drunk conglomerate of townsfolk take it upon themselves to scoop out the Flesh Pit and destroy it.

Autumn
Week 25, the Mists. Workers are hit with the Dark Blight during their quarantining efforts. The City believes that all Infected should now go into the Citadel to be quarantined, and Dexter Stormfist agrees. As the Infected enter quarantine, the citizens begin to try to understand the mechanisms of the boulder, attempting to seal the Citadel.Week 26, the Evoker.

Winter
Week 37, the Berserker. All projects have finished and the House Dawnbringer, Dawnbreaker, the Academy, the Guildmasters, the Orphanage, the Aristocrats, and the Lost Eladrin have moved into the Vault comfortably and safely due to Cassandra Dawnbreaker's expansions. But, of course, nothing can be perfect. Zachariah Comstock continues to be a problem, wander deeper and deeper beyond where he should be, eventually finding an open chamber. In it, he finds a lever, which unlocks the way to a huge underground chamber. In the middle, surrounded by a massive lake of water, is a serpent curled around a spine of rock. And Comstock wants it.Week 38, the Horseman.
