Episode 6: Death at Sea

General Summary

The session started with lots of mad pointing of guns around the Turtledragon's Byway, frantically searching for The One who poisoned him. After some guns were leveled at the Vagabond, who claimed his innocence, tensions eased and everyone split off to return to their rooms for the night, hopefully with locked doors.

In the morning, everyone met the crew of the Ghost of Fire, Captain Eammon McGregor's ship. It is crewed by the half elf first mat Finander, the dragonborn bosun Firebeard, the human Quartermaster Fion McGuthrey, the surgeon Hubert the bullywug, and Mett, the warforged chef who doesn't wear clothes. In addition to this main crew, there were seventy-two other crew members, five of which were a family of bandits that decided to all join in on the treasure hunting voyage.

The first few days at sea were calm, but things started to pick up once the ship sailed passed the Ghost Line. While Valeria had to work to earn her keep, the other members of the gang worked to keep up morale. The first day past the Ghost Line, the ship happened upon the great hulking form of a dead being in the waves. Upon its back was a small clan of strange men of ill pallor that had carved strange symbols into themselves. When the crew of the Ghost of Fire attacked, they responded in kind, throwing their javelins back and forth at them. After a brief skirmish, the crew handily defeated them and looted their island, finding a few magical items and a small hoard of treasure. They also collected a few sirloins of the dead creatures flesh, just in case it tasted good. No one tried it, but it is still in the ships hold if anyone were to have the urge.

The second day, everything went as normal until night fell. An unusual fog rolled in, covering the seas up until it became level with the Ghost of Fire's decks. Within the fog, figures could be seen, standing to a point that it appeared that they were on eye level with someone looking out at them from the deck. Tyra and Valeria both heard voices whisper to them from the figures, and while Captain McGregor warned them not to, Valan and Charles both looked out to the fog people. Charles became enraptured with the voice of his mother, whispering out from the fog, and attempted to leap out to find her. Fortunately, the captain knocked him down and pinned him with a second warning. Unfortunately, this warning didn't take, and Charles spun out from underneath his metallic peg leg and shoved him over. Valan, Valeria, and Tyra all tried to hold him back in turn, but each failed in this task. The Vagabond stepped forwards and, seeking to maim him and prevent him from stepping over the ledge, fired a single round at Charles.

Valan reached over and caught his falling form, pulling him back onto the vessel. Unfortunately, while the Vagabond had aimed at his leg, the shot had severed the limb at its root, and Charles had already died of shock by the time he was secured back on solid ground. Despite numerous attempts to save him, Tyra was unsuccessful in their healing. After the event, Valan put the Vagabond on a brief trial, unsure if he had been replaced by a changeling in the time they had been apart before departure. The Vagabond responded in a sketchy tone, asking if this is something Valan really wanted to do. Upon confirmation, he ran his hand along Valan's silver blade, which, while it was revealed that he was not a changeling, the Vagabond's blood did tarnish Valan's silver blade, something that was not dwelt on.

The third day, after Charles was laid to rest at sea, a pirate flag upon his chest, a small vessel containing a single spirit appeared astride the ship, moving much faster than a single passenger luxury rowboat should. The spirit on board offered a wager to Tyra, Valeria, Valan, and Fives, the crewmember who had decided to come with. They were to play in a game of liars dice, first to win three wins. After four rounds, Fives was the lucky winner, and was able to keep the medallion which contained the spirit of a fey named Vanderlith.

On the fourth day, the crew struck gold. A ship was found adrift which contained a colossal amount of treasure. The entire hold of the galleon was filled from stem to stern with gold and jewels and other precious loot.

On the fifth day, there was a red sunrise, and as the saying goes: "Red sky in morning, sailors take warning." Unfortunately, the storm which was approaching was not a normal storm, and it enchanted many of the sailors on deck. Tyra was not enchanted by the approaching tragedy waiting to happen, but the Vagabond reminded them that it was the party's job to press the crew onwards when they felt like turning back. So, after some cajoling, with a little bit of pandering, and a lot of calling upon the Captain's spirit of adventure, Tyra managed to convince the captain to push onwards.

This was a poor choice, but the only choice. They were caught in a Maelstrom, tossed about like a toy ship and battered by the winds and elements. A ghost ship chose then to invade their space, dropping onto the deck and knocking Tyra, Valeria, Fives, and Callisto out to sea. After Fives was swept out, Fours went to take his place, but was swept out the next turn. In an attempt to stand in for his brother, Threes ran forward, but had his life drained from him by the specters of the ghost ship. Twos at this point tried to avenge his brother, but was also swept out to sea. Valan held on valiantly for a while, but after watching Dahlia and the Vagabond both be swept out, he rushed below deck to grab as many platinum as he could. Ones followed him, and seeing him stealing from the crews earning, tried to stop him in a rage. All of his sons had just died, and this hooligan was going to steal all their earnings? Not on his watch. Unfortunately for Ones, Valan had a gun and ended his life. Shortly after grabbing some of the platinum, the ghost ship broke through the hull, cracking him upon the head and knocking him into the sea. Tyra, as they were stabilized by the bullywug with the staff of healing, noticed between bouts of fleeting consciousness something huge moving beneath the waves.
