Curious and impulsive, gnomes are another favored creation of the Bedlamite. They are gifted with natural talents for crafting, tinkering, and the art of artifice. Their livelyhoods often revolve around their natural ingenuity, and their homes are filled with artwork. They live underground, often near dwarves, but get more fresh air than the dwarves do, enjoying th enatural, living world on the surface whenever they can. Their homes are well hidden by both clever construction and simple illusions.
Forest Gnomes
Living in camoflaged boroughs beneath the roots of forests across the continent, forest gnomes hold a close relationship to sylvan elves and good-spirited fair folk that also call the forests their home. Large networks of these communities live in the Northern Forest and the Wystwood of the Rose Protectorate. Some more tropical groups found their way to the shores of the Wilds, and make a life trading with the seafaring folk of the warm waters to the south.
Rock Gnomes
The natural inventiveness that personifies gnomekind is exemplified in the rock gnome. The rock gnomes once hailed from the Barrier Mountains beneath the Black Sands, but were driven out in a theological conflict between themselves and the goliaths who also dwell there. Though a few stayed behind, many migrated in a great diaspora across the continent, making homes in other settlements as tutors and scholars, gemcutters and tinkerers. One rock gnome might tutor a single human noble family for generations, blessed by the long lifespan of gnomes. But the greatest population of rock gnomes found their home in the Red Mountains, where they worked with the dwarves to create great machines of industry and war.
Deep Gnomes
Though similar in stature and nature to the more commonly encountered gnomes, it is unsure if deep gnomes are actually related to their surface-dwelling cousins. Lacking gender, the deep gnome makes their home in crevaced, rocky terrain. They build beautiful, arching pathways between hollowed out domiciles in the fjords of southern Aurelia and the rocky terraces of the Red Mountains, though they avoid their brethren who work tirelessly to create the warforged. There is a sect of deep gnome indiginous to the Black Sands Desert, since even before the desolation of the Monarch swept across the forests of Kyrr to create it; surviving the blast, they've built an incredible network of tunnels beneath the surface of the sands, reveling in the solitude the harsh environment above grants them, though their tunnels often bring them into conflict with kobolds in the region.
Though rumor has it deep gnomes spring from cracks in the rocky terrain of their homes, any deep gnome will assure you that this is fictitious conjecture conjured by surfaces gnomes; though there will always be a mischievous twinkle in their eyes as they pointedly leave you unenlighted on the deep birds and deep bees.
