Shifter
Unlike the other worldly species, shifters were not a creation of the Bedlamite or any other god. Instead, they are created by a specific set of manifestations of a disease called the Verdancy. A volitile virus, the Verdancy can create any number of symptoms, from bark-like skin or the ability to process sunlight into sustainance, to the complete transformation of a person into a humanoid tree. Because of their infection, shifters are often called weretouched; not quite a werebeast, but more than Mortal. The symptoms of the Verdancy in shifters give them the ability to call upon an animalistic guise, and they take on aspects of this guise even while not shifted. The Verdancy can grant them enhanced vitality as Beasthides, vicious fangs and claws as a Longtooth, catlike reflexes as a Swiftstride, or enhanced senses as a member of the Wildhunt.
Because of their beastial prowess, shifters were invaluable soldiers during the War, becoming frontline fighters, scouts, or carrier troops, depending on how the Verdancy manifested within them. Because of this, it is wondered if the Verdancy was a creation of one of the empires that got loose in their attempt to create bestial supersoldiers, though this speculation is ultimately unfounded.
Notably, these symptoms of the Verdancy are also genetic; they can be passed to offspring without passing the risks associated with the entirity of the disease. Though this phenomenon is new enough that there are no full settlements of shifters being founded, natural-born shifters can be found throughout Andali looking for those of similar birth to understand their heritage.
