The Archivist

When the Bedlamite first set off the chain of events that would one day lead to the creation of Mortals and the Mortal Sphere, the Archivist put pen to paper to begin recording the actions of the gods. Of course, this was in a time before the invention of pen and paper, but this is the most suitable analogy that Mortal minds can conceive to give the record keeping methods of the Archivist form. The Archivist is the patron diety of knowledge, arcane secrets, memory, and of quiet places and the written word. It is said the Archivist so loves the written word because it was Their gift to Mortals; the means to which they might hold their memories and remember their songs. It is said that anything that is written down within the world finds a mirror of itself recorded in the Great Library of Apocrypha, the winding, maze-like home of the Archivist.

When any creature dies, it sends one of its agents, a Librarian, to record the memories of that creature as they wait in line for judgment in Manto. The Librarian transcribes those memories on a Soul Scroll and returns to the Great Library to give the Scroll to the Archivist, who then sorts, categorizes, and otherwise organizes the soul's experiences into the Great Library. It sends its agentsout into the world at times as well, to record that which is yet unknown to Mortal and god alike, taking stock of the hidden places and forbidden knowledge of Andali. With this boon in mind, many attempt to steal into the Great Library to lay claim to that which is beyond Mortal ken. But this path is ill advised, for the Librarians guard the knowledge of the Archivist with unparalleled authority. Those caught unwelcomed in the Great Library will find themselves counted amongst the Librarian's ranks.

Strict curses lie upon the knowledge that the Archivist has deemed too dangerous for Mortal minds. Drink too deeply of the wells of forbidden knowledge too quickly, and you may find yourself transformed into a nothic, a monstrous creature with wicked talons, chitonous skill, and one terrible, unblinking eye. Nothics are cursed arcanists, empty of mind, who lurk in the shadows of magical places, hungry for the secrets other mages keep. Steep yourself in the journey to forgotten, barred knowledge, immersing yourself in its study over a lifetime, you may find yourself transfigured into an allip. Over the course of study of knowledge at the fringes, the madness slowly corrupts and distorts a Mortal's body, ruining their physical form and reducing them to a writhing mass of shadow composed of the fragments from the victim's psyche and overwelmed psychic agony. Every allip is wracked with horrifying insight that torments what remains of its mind. The sense that some colossal truth sits just outside their recall plagues them for an eternity until they are eventually released from their torment and allowed to move on from the Mortal Realm.

And there are some secrets yet so terrible the Archivist has been bid by those in Their congregation to see the secrets barred from Mortal Kind entirely. In performing a primordial ritual, Mortals can call upon the Archivist to recant a memory into the Veritas, obscuring the knowledge from the historic record and preventing any future discovery from any recorded source. However, the Veritas could not remove a memory from the minds of Mortals who experienced the event first hand, and so there may persist an oral record after the ritual. This Veritas has been the envy of many thieves who would seek to unlock what is stored within. The Great Library has no shortage of Librarians.
