Riltean
"He’s there we can’t let that stand"
"How are we supposed to do this? The war isn’t going away. We’ve been abandoned, there’s no way out."
She was one of two Gusine (Tetled being the other) and two Kuath (Ebeah and Zecu) that were taken at the same time from Tinimul. Decades ago they were looking for mushrooms outside of Tinimul when they were beset by bandits. The Gusine were both relatively strong mages and were able to put an end to the bandits. In the next Taking, they were taken. They came in and met Nuthur Neselle and Ses. Miug had not been part of the igloo village at that time, though there were a few more Gusine, Hashku, and Malema living there at the time. The four decided that they didn’t want to be lorded over by some crazy Ondolon and they wanted out. They didn’t want to fight, they didn’t want to meditate, they were looking for another option. After wandering for some time they found The Town, a fortified place on the lake.
An unknown actor wanted the Kuath to go to the Frosty Temple so they found ways of sending giant fire-breathing worms that tunneled right under the walls to attack the city until the Kuath left.
After the walls were breached many left as it no longer felt safe. Most of the Malema left, a good number of Tolorians who had not wanted to fight now saw it as their only option, a few Ondolons left to go back to Nuthur’s village. Ses doesn’t remember any other Ondolons showing up and had never heard of the town so they probably didn’t make it. Tolorian artificers remained and most of the Gusine. Some Kuath left for the temple. As long as some Kuath remained, however, the worms kept showing up from time to time so they were eventually expelled with food, resources, water boxes, and other odds and ends to help them survive in the Frosty Place. Most Kuath understood but some were bitter about it and conducted raids against the city. Ebeah and Zecu understood, and by that time Riltean and Tetled were very close to them and left with them. They didn’t really know where to go so they headed back east to get to the lake south of Nuthur's village. At the lake they were constantly fending off Cold Walkers and yetis so they moved into the forest a bit and set up cabins not far from each other.
They lived like that for a long time. Decades. Zecu took up sketching and there were sketches of the things and places she’s seen around their cabin, but after some time a large number of Cold Walkers came through and though they fought their hardest they couldn’t fight them off. They’d been working on digging out an area under the Kuath cabin as a panic room of sorts but it wasn’t finished. Riltean was able to make it there and had to choose between dying beside Tetled and Ebeah (Zecu died in the first wave, she was outside when they arrived) or living by escaping underneath. She realized her death wouldn’t save them so saved herself. She buried the dead. The Kuath were dismembered in the fight but Tetled was not dismembered and Riltean didn’t have the heart to do it. The Cold Walkers were being drawn north when Our Heroes dug Tetled out so he didn’t attack them
Riltean took everything she had, all the sketches that Zecu had, books she had taken from The Town, scraps of legends she heard. She developed the magical ability to eavesdrop at a distance but with no idea of where she’s hearing things or who is talking so she writes it all down but it’s jumbled.
The bond the four of them had had helped them through without going too crazy but the Frosty Place, the isolation, losing her lovers, she became rather insane but is lucid enough to realize her own insanity. She’s trying to figure out the nature of the Frosty Place but doesn’t really know what to do with it. Maybe she isn’t really trying to do anything about it. But there is a shitton of knowledge there if they can get Riltean to talk.
