The cold can be extremely dangerous to the unprepared.

Causes

Exposure to the extreme cold for extended periods can cause this illness.

Symptoms

Usually the ears, nose, and digits are the first parts of the body that are affected. The skin will turn red and painful, and will eventually go numb and hard. If left untreated the flesh will die, and if not amputated will cause an infection.

Treatment

The best way to prevent and reverse early stages of frostbite is to get out of the cold and slowly start to warm up.
