Though her origin now fully obscured, the previous god of the dead became smitten by a mortal queen. He raised the mortal to his side and called her Nera. Nera had ambitions of her own being that she knew it was her suitor who killed her in the first place. She began seeding her magic against her captor. Nera amassed followers of her own and completed her ritual of ascension. The Raven Queen ascended to godhood and destroyed the previous god of the dead. But the other gods acted against her and allowed her only the moment of death.
