Androids were independently developed by several intelligent species long before warp travel was discovered. By the time of the First Galactic Convention, most androids had already developed free will, and one of the clauses within the convention ensured they were to all be freed of their slavery (or at least most of them.)
Androids were discriminated against for a number of decades after that first convention, but after the formation of the Aeon Federation and several androids earning positions of power throughout the galaxy, that discrimination subsided.

Basic Information
Anatomy
Androids are typically designed to look like a specific organic species, but a few models have stranger or more obvious mechanical pieces. Most androids have identifying circuits that light up underneath their skin, that sometimes can be augmented like a tattoo for cosmetic effect.
Internally, Androids require energy just like any other lifeform. To this effect, most androids operate with a miniaturized bio-reactor, identical in some ways to a digestive system. However, Androids are not concerned with nutrition. Simple calorie density is the only factor they consider when eating as calories translate directly to energy output.
Biological Traits
An android has the capability to live forever if maintenance is kept up through the years. However, some androids simply choose to stop living after they decide it has been long enough, and many of these people will donate their bodies back to the manufacturing plant they came from to be the host for a new central processor.
Genetics and Reproduction
Androids require the use of specialized manufacturing plants in order to reproduce, which leads to Androids being extremely protective over industrial planets that are their only means of procreating.
