Warforged Species in Aolara | World Anvil

Warforged (war-forged)

Out of all the strange and exotic sentient species on Aolara, the warforged race take the top as a true enigma. They emerged around a century ago from a distant plane far past the veil of known existence. Beings made of metal, stone, and wood; sentient, and structured as though organic, yet far beyond our levels of comprehension. They claimed to be from a place called Mechanus. A world of law and order and many more like themselves. They were as confused as the peoples of Aolara and had no idea where they were, or why they had been brought to the Material Plane. Their arrival went down in the history books as The Mechanum Fracture.

The first to appear say that they were part of a great war on their plane; centuries old and ceaseless. These first warforged told us stories of their creation. Objects of battle and destruction now displaced without purpose or a means of getting home. Society welcomed the newcomers with a tentative embrace, with many fearful of their power and sceptical of their true levels of sentience. Although some do treat warforged with the respect and the equality they deserve, there are still an embarrassing number who see them as lesser beings. Many warforged have had to deal with a century of discrimination and ridicule.

Living Steel and Stone

Warforged are formed from a blend of organic and inorganic materials. Root-like materials infused with alchemical fluids serve as their muscles, wrapped around a framework of steel, wood, or stone. Armoured plates form a protective outer shell and reinforce joints. Although mechanical in nature, warforged can still feel pain and emotion. They share a common facial design, with a hinged jaw and crystal eyes embedded beneath a reinforced brow ridge.

Beyond these common elements of warforged design, the precise materials and build of a warforged vary based on the purpose for which it was designed. Although it would seem they were manufactured, warforged are living humanoids containing within them a mysterious force that can only be described as a soul. Resting, healing magic, and the Medicine skill all provide the same benefits to warforged that they do to other humanoids. It is widely believed that no other warforged have travelled to Aolara since The Mechanum Fracture, yet their population hasn't decreased. It has been discovered that many warforged are able to construct and give life to another warforged, however the process is still a mystery.

Warforged Personality

The typical warforged might show little emotion. Many warforged embrace a concrete purpose, such as protecting allies, completing a contract, or exploring a land. However, there are warforged who delight in exploring their feelings, their freedom, and their relationships with others. Most warforged have no interest in religion, but some embrace faith an mysticism, seeking higher purpose and deeper meaning.

The typical warforged has a sexless body shape. Some warforged ignore the concept of gender entirely, while others adopt a gender identity. The more a warforged develops its individuality, the more likely it is to modify its body, seeking out an artificer or master craftsman to customise the look of its face, limbs, and plating.

Quirks

Warforged often display an odd personality trait or two, given how new they are to the world. The Warforged Quirks table contains example quirks:

d8Quirk
1 You analyse - out loud - the potential threat posed by every creature you meet.
2 You often misread emotional cues.
3 You are fiercely protective of your friends.
4 You try to apply wartime discipline to every situation.
5 You don't know how to filter your feelings and are prone to dramatic emotional outbursts.
6 You don't understand clothing beyond its utility and assume it denotes a person's function.
7 You are obsessed with your appearance and constantly polish and buff yourself.
8 War is the only thing that makes sense to you, and you're always looking for a fight.

Warforged Names

The first warforged came through the fracture with assigned numerical designations for use in military service. Many of them quickly adopted nicknames, often given to them by their comrades. As independent individuals, some have chosen new names as a way to express their path in life. A few take on human names, often the name of a fallen friend or mentor.
