He is a non-descript mutt, yet the same dog appearing down through time. He is a mystery, but a welcome celebrity none-the-less. Some people think he is an old pagan spirit adapted to modern times, and others consider him a dog ghost that manifests for each holiday. Most revelers accept him as is.
