Self-Defense

All classes and genders are taught basic self-defense. Citizens of village, cities, etal can be called upon for military service and home defense, so there is a tradition of martial games and compulsory archery practice for men and boys. At the lower rungs of society, this martial ardor is usually played out with a passion for wrestling and physical contests held at all the major holidays. 

This also accounts for the profusion of fencing schools and teachers in towns and cities. Women are likewise expected to take up arms and defend their homes, especially if the men are away.
