Aasimar

The Aasimar (or "Angerru" in Celestial) are descendants of ancient elves, humans and orcs whose bloodline intermingled with angels and other divine beings. They are exceedingly rare, often hidden among the population, to the point that many people believe that they do not exist.    Aasimar are born with typical features for an elf, orc or human and even as they mature, most of the differentiating changes are subtle and fairly easy to disguise. They are often taller than the average man, though not dramatically so. Remnants of angelic feathers gather on their shoulders and back, which can be tucked away in their clothing. Their eyes have a tinted glow at dawn and dusk, often appearing as the color of the clouds above them, though even this can be obscured with the right glasses or helmet. Most often, they are described as ethereal and other-worldly, a kind of extraordinary beauty that can cause others to be uncomfortable around them.   For centuries, scholars and priests have attempted to understand the birthing patterns of the Aasimar, as they are erratic at best. Many families have no clue of their angelic heritage - apart from the occasional rumors about a great-grandparent - until their child begins to grow feathers around the age of eight years old. In fact, it is said that even if two Aasimar were to procreate, there is a less than one in one hundred chance that the child would be an Aasimar as well, defaulting to the traits of their grandparents. It is possible that there are no more than a few thousand alive at any given time.    Because of their numbers, Aasimar have found it difficult to organize into a singular culture. Even small communities that manage to gather together are made irrelevant within a few generations. As such, most Aasimar have chosen to assimilate into the cultures they are born into, though they often choose to live on the outskirts or in the wilds, preferring the solitude and quiet - where they can hear the whispers of those who came before more clearly.    There is a common misconception that all Aasimar have a common hunger to do "good" in the world. This has often led to their depictions as saints and miracles - which can put an undue burden on them, especially as children. In truth, an Aasimar is often called to engage in the domains of the god who their angelic ancestor once served. For example, if their ancestor was an angel of Sevast, The Just Hand, they might be called to the law, serving as a knight, a guard or a lawyer. If their ancestor was an angel of Kemehea, The Eversprout, they might choose to remain a simple farmer, contributing particularly delicious crops to their community.    This connection is a deep one that can cause much emotional turmoil throughout an Aasimar's life. Because their heritage is so hard to track, they often have no idea which god is pulling on their heart, leaving them feeling lost and woeful. As young adults, many Aasimar spend their days traveling, meditating, following their spiritual urges, hoping to find answers that can quell their feelings. Unfortunately, this makes them particularly susceptible to corruption by devils and other nefarious forces. But when they finally determine the "God of Their Heart", it is often said to feel like a warm blanket, draped over the shoulders.    Though this spiritual comfort is fulfilling to Aasimar, it does not transform them into zealots or evangelists. In fact, many Aasimar avoid the priesthood altogether, as they feel that their connection, through every day works, is stronger than any cleric or paladin.
