in The Lands of AqualonThe Spiral Sea is a literal spiraling ocean that winds its way up to the South Pole from the Ocean Belt in one long-winding strand. Getting to the South Pole by ship is an insanely long voyage, which makes it almost impossible to get to Borealis by ordinary means.
