Orchid Mantis

This is a type of praying mantis that looks like a flower to lure (bait) pollinators to get close enough to catch and eat them. It uses its color, pattern and a pheromones that mimic the smell of an orchid.

Biological Traits

There are variations on the type of flower, color, type of prey and scent. H. coronatus shows some of the most pronounced size sexual dimorphism of any species of mantis; males can be less than half the size of females.

First-stage nymphs mimic bugs of the family Reduviidae, which have a powerful bite and are foul-tasting.
