Tetrodotoxosis

Written by Pookas Kreations

TTX Poisoning is caused by the Blue-Ringed Octopus, they inject its toxin by biting. The venom is held in salivary glands, on either side of their beak.

Transmission & Vectors

This toxin comes from the bite of the aquatic animal the blue-ringed octopus. They are shy animals and will only bite if threatened. Of course, since the toxin is so deadly it is also used for poison. The toxin kills quickly with only a minute amount of the poison. Only a drop is needed.

Causes

This venom contains tetrodotoxin, histamine, tryptamine, octopamine, taurine, acetylcholine, and dopamine. The toxin is also found in pufferfish, and poison dart frogs. The venom can be introduced via the bite, poisoning, or even eating the animals that produce tetrodotoxin. Those envenomed are fully aware, even though they can't move.

Symptoms

The pain starts within 5-10 minutes then begins to throb and may get numb and involve the rest of the extremity bitten. Bleeding may be excessive. Early symptoms may include
  • excessive salivation
  • difficulty swallowing
  • chest tightness
  • tingling
  • numbness
  • sweating
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • blindness
Later symptoms may include
  • paralysis
  • weakness
  • lack of coordination
  • lack of oxygen in your tissues, skin may appear blue or purple

Treatment

If medical care is not provided immediately, respiratory failure may occur, which may lead to cardiac arrest, and death. Death is usually from suffocation due to paralysis of the lungs.

Prognosis

Using a respirator and/or intubation, and an IV can help, but this is not a sure thing. There is no antivenom for this bite. Some people are able to fight off this toxin, but this is rare. Magic can also be used to heals the bite. Neutralize poison, restoration, or moderate healing needs to be used to heals from this poison.
