The Waveriders

The waveriders are an all-volunteer crack military unit of the seafolk. When speed is needed they each have a mount, the type depends on the location. Common mounts include giant sea horses, hippocampus, mana ray, dolphin, shark, whale, or sea turtle among others. These companions are bonded to each other in the first few years of service.

Waveriders are the protectors of the sea, its innocents, and the law. In peaceful times, they are a police force as well as guardians of royalty. Each noble house provides volunteers to their ranks (usually officers), but any person can join, male or female. More seek to join every year than are accepted.

The physical, mental, and psychological standards are high. You must be fit in all these categories. Bullies, sociopaths, those weak of mind or body won't be accepted Intelligence and initiative is a must, as well as the capability of following orders and keeping your mouth shut when needed.
