Treekin
Treekin are smaller cousins of the Kangu. As their name implies they live in the trees and rarely touch the ground.
Naming Traditions
Feminine names
Females tend to be given plant and especially flower names. Like: rose, lily, fern, etc.
Masculine names
Male names tend to be for what their personality is like or a skill they are good at. Examples: thorn, gruff, red, smith, jumper, etc.
Family names
Most family names have the type of tree that the family prefers to live in. Like oak, ash, willow, etc.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Forest-speak, sylvan, and kangu. Treekin are a secretive race and rarely talk to outsiders. Only a few even learn the languages of other races.
Culture and cultural heritage
They have a primitive tribal culture. They see no need to improve their technological level and if asked why they reply that everything they need the forest provides.
Shared customary codes and values
Don't waste resources, be careful with fire, share and share-alike.
Average technological level
Primitive tribal society. Most treekin tribes are in the stone age but a few are in the bronze age. Some are nomadic as well.
Common Etiquette rules
Everything belongs to the community to share with each other. Don't be stingy or selfish.
Common Dress code
The bare minimum of clothes are worn and only at need. Often all is worn is a halter-top or vest and kilt or shorts. Around family casual nudity is the norm.
Art & Architecture
Treekin are accomplished treesingers, woodworkers and weavers. Their art is always of natural materials and nothing is taken without need.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Treekin are almost strictly vegetarian, no meat (except insects). They won't kill or eat any thinking creature.
Birth & Baptismal Rites
The first night after birth, the child is taken to the top of the canopy and bathed in the moonlight.
Coming of Age Rites
The child coming into adulthood is left to fend for themselves on the forest floor. They are not allowed to take to the trees for 3 days and nights. If they survive, they are an adult.
Funerary and Memorial customs
After a memorial ceremony and wake. Their dead are taken to the top of the canopy and left for the birds and insects.
Common Taboos
Eating or killing any thinking creature.
Common Myths and Legends
There is a legend of a Quetzl-Nagara visiting an ancient tribe. The Treekin treated her as a Goddess and they hope she will return in the future.
