Captain Odessa Zaine

Of Spice Islands origin, she is dark of skin and eyes, and wears her hair long and dreadlocked, topped with a scarf and tricorn. She wears a long coat and beneath a small amount of padded armor. She's now probably in her early 40s, although she appears younger. The only give-away are the creases around her eyes which belie years of squinting out to sea, scouring the horizon. She wears a good number of rings and beads and speaks with a Spice Islands accent (Jamaican).

Personal history

Born to an important family on the piracy hub of Kapulaga in the Spice Islands, Captain Odessa could sail almost as soon as she could walk. She soon entered into the family business. However, in a disappointment to her parents, she preferred shadows & trickery to all-out swashbuckling piracy. This was not best regarded in Kapulaga, and she generally kept herself to herself.
At the age of 20, Zaine managed to trick her way into ownership of the Umberlee's Howl. Excited to have her own vessel, she assembled a crew - mostly composed of people from outside the main pirating families and crews, picking up strays, lost sailors and talented hucksters.
Using the ship as a base, and transporting cargo (legitimate and smuggled) as a front and a meal ticket, Zaine supplemented the ship's income running confidence tricks, hustles and the like and then using the sea to make a quick getaway. 
Zaine picked up one particular stray in Mitzu, Gamble, who sailed with the crew and pledged loyalty. 
Since Gamble has left the Howl, her relationship with Zaine has bee a little more strained, though each time they meet, Zaine expresses her surprise and approval that she is not dead yet.

Motivation

Respect. As she's never been the pugnacious type, she doesn't receive a lot of respect from other pirates, despite making quite a good fortune for herself and crew. Though respected by her crew, she is (unfairly) underestimated by other captains, particularly Captain Occhiomorto, who is everything she isn't (brash, fighty, stereotypical pirate who likes to kill for the sake of it).
She fears the loss of her ship and crew. Her ship is her freedom and her home. She's fiercely loyal to her crew.
