Session 21.5 Chat with Free Aladorans

General Summary

Here are the records of what I could catch and scribble down quickly of our interactions with the members of Free Alador. There was so much to learn, I knew we needed notes!  Stormy

Cita w/ her family

Cita w/ Gandy

Cita
What happened to Carlo? Was the family able to bury him?
Gandy
No, we never recovered Carlo. He isn't the only one though. So many here have lost someone. I... I .. I'm glad we still have everyone else in our family, and I'm thankful you are back - but I'm not sure what to do. Carlo always knew what to do.

Cita w/ Brilliante and Gloria

Cita
I'm so glad to meet you. I realize now how long I've been gone and how much has changed.
Gloria
Did you bring me anything?
Brilliante
You look just like I saw in my dream. Are you going to fight all the bad guys now?

Cita w/ Canto

Cita
Dad, when I came home I wanted to make you proud of me. And I will! Do we have any allies still in the city?
Canto
Me, no my lass. Your mum holds us all together. Her and that porridge - mends the very soul it does. For sum reason Lord Epron keeps me at the table. Good man that. I think Master Ramkin is still at the guild, he's always been a friend to the family - but 'is power there is short indeed.

He listens to Cita ask if he is proud of her, he hangs his head just a bit.

Tha’s me talkin. You always had too much o’ me in you. Now your mom… she always sees the best.

He sits down on a crate and pats the one next to him, for Cita. As she sits beside him, he gently takes her hand in his.

I thought the day I married your mom was the best day o’ my life. And then she gave me you. That first day I held you … I was proud of you then. Always have been. I may not show it, and I may have always been too busy.

He looks into her eyes.

That day I held my tiny kitten in my arms, I so wanted to make you proud of me. I… I’ve never provided as much for you, or the others. I didn’t do so well at Thieves’ school. Your mom has always made the best of things… she raised you she did. And as we added more at the table, we all got distracted. Then you… took it on yourself to ‘unburden’ us… to head out on your own. You didn’t say as much… but y’r mom and I knew.

He looks away, clears his throat, then looks back.

And now… look at you! I’ve heard your friends talk about how much you have done. How you have grown into a great scout. I… I couldn’t be more proud.

He can’t say anymore. Canto simply holds Cita’s hand and beams in pride at her.

Our Group w/ the Lords of Alador

Cita
Has anyone else in the nobility resisted Amanita? Is there anyone left in the royal family to lead Aladore?
Lord Jarrus Ferma II
That elf - Grasti - she is controlling the king. She.. has this way about her... like everything she does is perfect. Cormal is all in with her. I can't - she killed my son. She controls so much - and we never know who - better to save those we can in secret
Lord Epron
Aye, it's a dangerous game in the castle. We have to attend court once a week or so. Each time we go there I expect to die. I started Free Alador in my warehouse here on the island when my workers in the shades were going missing - and worse. I started taking them out. Then I started taking everyone I could. The purges in the shades were terrible. We lost so many.
Stormy
My Lords, Lady Catherine (who was trying to reach Lord Epron) has this feeling of perfection about her too. I can't say it's related. But that feeling rings a bell. Do you know what that "perfection-likeness" means? I feel like I should know, though I can't place it.

We've seen Amanita's followers in other areas. With you both being in the business of trade, you might hear rumors. Any idea how fast Amanita's priests are spreading or where it started? Anything else that might be of help?

We found the Dwarven Embasy to be safe. And it seems the Craftsman's Hall is too. What about the Wizard's Guild? We have some business there, if it's possible.
Lord Epron
It’s almost like you’ve met Grasti – the description is so similar, white hair, pointy ears, beautiful and gracious in every movement – yet – not exactly the same. Did she have a gem stone on her forehead? Grasti also has something like ceremonial scaring on her face. Perhaps they are related?
Lord Ferma
I would think not.

He harrumphs.

That Grasti is a creature unto herself. If there was another like her she would probably murder the poor soul.
Lord Epron
The priests seem to be stepping up their banter and presence in the Northern Wards of Aladore – I would think that is related to the activities in the Shades and Southward being complete – for them.
Lord Ferma
Not much we can do, I keep saying… we need to get more people out of here. Send more away. Keep them safe.
Stormy
I don't remember a gem or scaring on Lady Catheryn. But she had tattoos on her arms.

Amanita's priests aren't just here in Alador. We've encountered them multiple times from New Haran to here. So if people are moved from here, they may not stay safe for long.

Stormy calls over her companions to ensure they're in the loop and to help share the info if the Lords want it.

Stormy
Stormy tries to see if there's something special about her, or if all dogs can sense the spore infected. She uses speak to animals.

Hey Stella. You are such a good girl helping out the people here.

Stormy gives her a scritch if she allows it.

Can you tell me if your talent is a special one or if all good dogs like you can sense the spore infected?
Stella
Stormy struggles at first, a cat trying to have a heart to heart with a dog takes time. Then Stormy meets Stella’s pups, and the two bond in that moment. From what you can tell, and your knowledge of nature – any dog with training could identify someone with a spore.
Stormy [to our group]
Do we need to bring a pup with us for advanced warning? I know we can use magic. But would having a pup save us some spell use? We battle the nasty monsters like that often.

Stormy is knowns for her soft spot for pets...

Our Group with the commonfolk Free Aladorans

With Cita's Family

Stormy
Mr. Sarez, sir, when I first met Cita I felt I needed to watch out for her. But I've watched her talents and confidence grow. She's become a friend that I can depend on to have my back. Ask her what she did to the thieves at the table in the inn. It was such fun to watch!

You mentioned that you weren't sure why the Lords invite you to the leadership table. But you seem to be the voice of the Shades here and have a level head. It gives insight they might not have. I'm glad they listen. What was the first thing you noticed before the Shades where quarantined?
Canto
Ye also seem to have a level head girl, and Cita trusts you for sure. Don’ mind telln you that we shoulda seen things happenen.

A group of workers showed up to rebuild an old tower not far from our house. But they didn’t really build it as a tower. And they were strange folk.

Then Silo – he’s the guard cap’n that watched over the shades – he went missin. Then ol’ Medina vanished, she was a grandmother to half the people in the shades. Held us all together she did. Then we heard the screams at night – and found piles of bones and flesh in the morn’. Hard times.

News spread fast that it was a plague – the bone plague. We know better now. Then that tower started belching out darkness, streaming up into the sky.
Stormy
A tower, you say? And leaders in the community vanished? Oh my... Thank you for the information!

Stormy scribbles down some notes in her notebook. She's not too far from running out of pages. But she lets him see she's not written down his name or the location.

Stormy
I see where Cita gets her grace. It's good to see more Tabaxi, especially ones doing good. The last of our people we saw on the road were dumb bandits. Not smart or resourceful. Thought they'd have an easy reward for the head of our friend Cernan.

I'd hoped to hear news of our Tabaxi homeland. I miss home, even the settlement on the continent. By chance would you have any news?
Maria
No I don’t dearest kin. We are so far inland, I was actually hoping you might know more than I do.

Yes – many of our young lads have turned to being scallywags. It’s been harder on our folk since we left the islands. My grandma talked about it turning dark when the volcano blew – her stories remind me of our darkness here. I don’t want to leave my home! Our home.

She looks over at Canto.
Stormy
What news I have is several years old, after I scouted past Sandvik. I sailed with several of my companions shortly after that. Our people losing our home was hard. I sincerely hope this darkness can be stopped and you don't have to move again. If there's anything my companions and I are able to do, we will do it.

Stormy tells her what she can remember, if it's new to Maria.

By the way, porridge was never my favorite. But yours...It's amazing. Your talent for cooking is magic! (Stormy thinks for a moment.) Maybe real magic?

Stormy
You have a gift of foresight? (If he doesn't know the word, she explains about visions of the future and what might be.) Have you foreseen anything else?
Brilliante
Brilliante and a few other kids are playing with bits of old pallet and crate that someone cut down to be building blocks

He looks at Stormy kinda seriously

I don’ see much. Just a couple dreams.

He gets up and whispers in Stormy’s ear

… and a little bird tells me things.
Stormy
Stormy totally perks up. She whispers back.

A little bird? A yellow one? You've seen it too?

Stormy [to Cita's siblings]
I assume they would crowd around her asking questions and giving her hugs and be the last to bed.

Tell us of your escape. I'm sure you have a tale to tell your big sister!
Sorpress
I have a pink dress, it used to be Bonita’s, but we had to leave it at home, did you see it at my house? Gloria isn’t big enough to wear it yet so it’s still mine, did you bring us anything?

Have you tried my mom’s porridge?

Brilliante wouldn’t let us leave the house when the bad men where outside. We all wanted to leave cuz they were calling to us, but he stood against the door and wouldn’t move. Mama didn’t want to be mad at him, then all of a sudden we didna wanna go out. Then Brilliante said to hide and we hid.

Do you ever hide? I bet Cita show’d you how to hide, she could always hide best even though she’s bigger than me.

Is that your dragon? Does she eat people? Where is her treasure hoard? Does she sleep on gold?

Did you know mamma growing up? She’s a ‘baxi too! I have her ears see?
Stormy
Alas I did not see the dress. I'm sure it's lovely by how you describe it!

Interesting. You felt you should go to the men calling but Brilliante stopped you? Wow!

Yes I have had to hide. It can be hard to stay still, can't it?

When Sorpress slows the slew of questions. Stormy goes to check with her crew, asking if we should leave the keg of iced cream for the people here. They could use some cheer.

With Cintanon

Stormy
I would love to trade songs and stories if there's a bit of down time. I was so inspired by your fighting song! What brought you to lead the rescue missions into the Shades? Did you also go into Southward, too? If so, do both areas have the same nasty creatures?
Cintanon
Oh Happy to trade songs! Know any of the great ballads from the Northern Isles? Any of the mountains? Sea shanties are good to, but I have’ta watch my audience with some of those.

Many of us have lead groups into the Shades and Southward. Just my turn is all. Although I don’t think we’ll be goin to the Shades anymore, Or I guess the Southward.

Some families sheltered in basements, and it took a long time to search them all, so we think the Shades are clear now – and it’s too dangerous to go there if there is no need. The Southward we had a better handle on from the start, so we think that is clear as well, but just as dangerous.

Aye – both have ravenous spore hounds running loose. I don’t know where they have come from, and I’m not sure I want to know.
Stormy
Stormy gets out her journal and turns to the page that has the song of the Tabaxi discovering Sandvik, reminding herself of the tune and pulls her hand drum from her pack. She lets Cintanon join in on the chorus, as she bets he can pick up a tune faster than she can. Then she sings the one she wrote of how she met Shimmer. She lets him copy down the traditional one.

I'm not as good a bard as you. But my hope for this song about my dear rambunctious Shimmer is to help dispel some of the distrust of dragons. They are all dangerous if angered, to be sure. But not all are evil as you can see with this young one. You are welcome to add it to your songs if you wish.

Thank you for sharing about what you know. My friends and I have some ideas-maybe even some proof, and yeah it's terrifying.

Stormy shivers.

With Carl

Stormy
Stormy offers him a page of paper and writing utensil, assuming he can write. Shimmer trots over when she sees Stormy approaching him. She sensed Cita's tension too when Cita spoke his name.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. You seem very humble now. Do I have your word, you won't ever pick on Cita again? She's like a sister to me. I always have her back.
Carl
Carl isn’t interested much in communication. And he was very hard to find, doesn’t take part in the community, he lives in an old shack down by where ‘his’ boat is docked. When Stormy asked about Cita – he walks away into the darkness
Stormy
Stormy asks to borrow the bag of holding. Steps outside out of view, scoops out 2 small cups of the iced cream from one of the casks, tucks the cups into her own bag, returns the bag of holding and shuffles hesitantly over to Carl's hut and knocks.

Uhm. Carl? I should have seen by your kneeling in submission to Cita what you meant. I'm sorry.

If there's a window, she pulls the cups out of her bag and holds one up hoping he'll see.

Sometimes my big mouth gets the best of me. It's what keeps me from being a top rated bard. Being a ranger fits me better. I like being on the sea and in the forests where I don't have to talk so much.

Anyway, I have a peace offering. It's a treat we found on our adventures. I'd like to share with you as a token of my apology. Not sure if you'll trust me or not. But I'll share.

If he doesn't open the door, she leaves it outside for him.

Amongst Our Group

Stormy [to Shimmer]
Hey greedy one, have you seen how little the kiddos here have? Give them rides for scritches or something that doesn't take from them.

They might be open to learning more about dragons too. Teaching them a few words in draconic might win you lifetime followers. As we saw from Abathar, dragons aren't always welcomed.
Shimmer
Shimmer pouts, but nods and goes back to her adoring fan children and curls up in the sleeping pile. There's a cat-like low, rumbling purr.

Rashid
He's a little taken aback by all of the conversations and activity going on around him. His family of origin was rather small, and this large extended family is a new experience for him, and even a little intimidating. He'd listen Intently to any discussion about the tower, and he's more than happy to help out if there are chores to do. He's really in "observe and absorb" mode right now.
Kids of Free Alador
Despite Rashid's best intentions to stay out of things, there are a few children that start to follow him around. Same is true for all the members. They don't have much hope, and many of them lost everything. This new band of heroes with all kinds of crazy stories is amazing to them. They cling to you and your every word.
Rashid
Rashid notices this. In the evening, he'll do some entertaining for the kids to keep them out of the way of the adults, and to give them something else to think about besides their current situation. He attempts a performance for them. He asks the children to gather around in a circle, where Cintanon had told stories and sang the night before. In amongst the smaller ones is a girl holding a ragged torn doll. Calling her forward, Rashid asks to see the dear toy. What is your name?
Little girl
Miranne
Rashid
And what is your dolly’s name?
Miranne
“Miss Bri”
Rashid
Well Miranne, come… sit by me. I sense there is magic in your Miss Bri. Shall we try to coax a little out of her?

The small girl nods, and kneels down beside Rashid.
Rashid
He then tells the four biggest boys to fetch the biggest pot Maria will lend them. They bring over a pot that would contain about two gallons. He then has them fill it with water. As the pot fills, Rashid starts intoning various magics and moving his arms around the pot.

The pot begins to glow, and then shine forth with a bright light [cast light on the pot].

The children back off at first… then realizing the light is harmless, they edge even closer.

When the pot is filled to the rim with water, Rashid slowly moves his hand over the surface. Slowly crystals form and spread across the surface. [Casting Frostbite on the water]. Soon there is a thick layer of crystalline ice at the top, reflecting and refracting the light into many colors… filling the entire room with dots and splashes of rainbow light.

Rashid then places Miss Bri onto the ice. As he moves his hands over the ice, tiny little figures form one at a time, dancing around the broken doll. [Prestidigitaion – create a small non-magical illusory image, a new one each 6 seconds]. The tiny figures each in turn dance and move around on the ice, touching the doll and then moving away and vanishing.

Then, sparks and magic dust pop out of Miss Bri, showering the area with a new glowing light.[Prestidigitation, harmless sparks].

As the children watch, Miss Bri seems to knit together on her own, bits and bobs rejoining and becoming whole. [mending]

Then once again Rashid waves his hands over the pot, and Miss Bri begins to shine like new, all the dirt and grime of little fingers and hard wear fade away. [Prestidigitation, clean and object]

The entire room shakes, a rumbling thrum comes from the pot, and the light from the pot changes colors in waves of pink, green and blue. [Thaumaturgy – three effects at once].

Then, suddenly, all is quite, dark and silent. Just as the ice melts Rashid quickly reaches out and grabs Miss Bri before she falls into the water. Handing her down to Miranne once again.

The room is silent. You notice that even the adults had stopped whatever they were doing to see and witness this wonder.
Miranne
She yells.

“She… all right! And.. she MAGIC!”

Holding up the dolly for all to see. The room erupts into laughter and clapping, hollering and whooping. This one small act, simple enough to Rashid, has made a dolly whole again, and filled all who saw it with hope and light.
Rashid
Rashid is also going to be keeping an eye on any of the kids who might have magical talent. He's not looking for an apprentice just yet, but maybe he can help a spark of talent to grow.

Thoradin
If there is a forge, he would offer his services there, whether the work be on simple tools (horseshoes, chains, hammers, etc.) or on basic weapons. And though he doesn't have Ani with him anymore, he do have his basic smithing tools.
People of Free Alador
So many things were left behind or broken in fleeing from the wards to Free Aladore - Thoradin finds himself at a local anvil working to repair everything from pots, pans, to buckles. Not very glamourous - but everyone is very thankful for these small favors and gifts of service.
Thoradin
Though Thoradin specializes more in smithing weapons and armor, he is a dwarf, and takes pride in a job well done. Any job well done. He's loving that his skills are helping everyone out.
